How did I suddenly go down to Ensign?

I don't know. I assumed that Ensign is bottom of the rung - or am I wrong? I don't know much about naval ranks.

In your Royal Navy: In Thomas Venn's 1672 Military and Maritime Discipline in Three Books the duties of Ensigns are to include not only carrying the colour but assisting the Captain and Lieutenant of a company and in their absence, have their authority. Until 1871, when it was replaced by second lieutenant, ensign was the lowest rank of commissioned officer in infantry regiments of the British Army (except fusilier and rifle regiments, which always used second lieutenant). It was the duty of officers of this rank to carry the colours of the regiment.

In the United States Navy, the rank of "ensign" superseded passed midshipman in 1862. It is the junior most commissioned officer in the navy, the coast guard, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps, and Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. The rank is also used in the United States Maritime Service and the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. It ranks below lieutenant junior grade and is also equivalent to a second lieutenant in the Army, Marine Corps, and the Air Force.

There isn't a list of the ranks on this forum, which is a little surprising. Most forums have a list that posters can view. I recall that ensign was in the middle of the ranks somewhere.

Oh well I will wait and see what the next rank is. Perhaps this is the first rank when I am actually considered commissioned, but I am sure I have been past all the various Chief Galactic whatever ranks already, not that I pay too much attention to them. Certainly though in a Traveller naval character, Ensign is the lowest rank of the lot!

Thank you for that. So I see I have just been commissioned, wow that was a long road to a commission!

It was all the Officer names before that were throwing me. By rights these should have all been Petty Officers, but I see you changed them to 'Stellar' and 'Galactic' Officers instead of the name Petty. Now I understand.

It should be sublieutenant not lieutenant junior grade I think.

Depends on the navy. For the United States Navy, it would be Lieutenant (Junior Grade). For the Royal Navy (and French Navy, I think), Sub-Lieutenant would be right.
