I think this game could use some sort of surprise mechanic (not loot boxes dear lord). Mechanic in a shape of global events, like a natural disaster! With pros and cons, not just to annoy players.
Volcanoes: High risk high reward. At early stages of game capturing volcano territory would benefit your religion and influence. Sacrifice rituals. Bonuses for certain cultures and shamanism.
Later player would use volcanoes for geothermal energy. All that and some other bonuses with a possibility of catastrophic eruption that would wipe out the whole region - now it's a good time for opponents to step in.
Typhoons and heavy storms: Your opponent is coming for you with a heavy fleet while you were busy playing farming simulator. You are not ready for this, nowhere to run. The gods are on your side, however. You watch how enemy's armada is consumed by the wrath of nature, by the biggest storm the world has ever seen. You call it "Persian nightmare".
Apart from tactical dis/advantages once the typhoon/storm is gone, a bunch of curiosities are to be found: shipwrecks, treasures, some future slaves! While typhoon is active there could be a huge buff for food production provided by seaport. Also typhoons help to keep the earth in thermal balance, so a reduction of pollution sounds like a nice bonus.
Hurricanes: Armies get huge movement debuff, they can barely move and start dying out if they stay in the open for a long time, like with ships in open sea. Maybe even a little debuff for industry? Or a big debuff if you didn't bother to build fortifications?
Ok, while hurricanes are as painful as they are, they also bring rainfalls to an entire region! Which means new forests, food production buff, again heat balance, uncontrollable desire to bless the rains down in Africa.
Earthquakes: Now that's tricky. Destroying buildings is too much, I think. Penalty for industry? New roads, rivers and paths are shaped. Also new deposits of strategic and luxury resources.
Tsunami: Whipe out an entire coast. New landscapes are created with new resources though.
Also I think there should be a diplomatic aspect. If some culture got hit hard, you could share your resources with them, send to them some of your population, bond together, prosper together or send them a trojan horse what the hell.
I believe natural disaster events can create lots and lots of remarkable and fun situations. And that's exactly why were are here, to have fun!
Of course these events should be customizable in game settings: choose how often should they occur, or disable them for good.
Honestly no clue if this can even be done. Or should be done. But if it's a bad idea, maybe it will lead someone to a good idea.
Just some thoughts from silly ol' me. Thanks!
