Well can't beat Horus Heresy series for a place to start
Hmmm... Right now I'm reading Safehold Series: the sixth book "Midst Toil and Tribulations" by David Weber. I definetly recommend this series from the bottom of my book-fanatic soul.
After I finish this I think I'll go with "Belisarius Series" by David Drake. One of my favorites.
