Whenever I try to open DotE, it starts to open, I make it through the logo screen, the cave, and a title page, but right before the main menu, the game crashes.

I've tried a few solutions, but I don't think they really helped.

EDIT: Do you use a desktop shortcut to launch the game?

I used to have that error. It's Steam related. Try this: make a shortcut to the desktop, close steam, then use the shortcut to open the game. Steam will start, and the game will launch perfectly.
