Amplitude joins the SEGA family!

Dear Endless Players,

 

Starting today, at 9 am, Amplitude will be writing a new chapter of its history. Since the beginning and our first success with Endless Space (which became a million-seller!), the market has become increasingly crowded. Even some of the biggest publishers want to make their own 4X games, and in an intense market like this, a small studio like Amplitude can get steamrolled.

 

What we want to do is to focus on making games; that is why we created Amplitude. But with the pressure on sales and marketing we found that more and more time was dedicated to everything else – everything that we didn’t have the size and scale to deal with. So we decided to look for the best partner we could to protect us from these distractions so that game development did not become a chore, but remained a passion. 

 

Therefore, we have decided to join forces with SEGA – yes, that SEGA! We want the only question that keeps us up at night to be, “How do I make better games?” Partnering with SEGA will bring us to a whole new level.

 

Of course you could wonder, “Why Sega?” If you were to ask just Mathieu and I, we could easily answer with the words “Creative Assembly and Relic!” because we are HUGE fans of their games. The opportunity to join them is incredible for us, a real dream come true.

 

But the bigger reason why we wanted to join SEGA was how they treat their internal studios. Often, studios are controlled by a central department that dictates what games they should do, and how and when. But SEGA is a company that offers its support to the creators, positioning itself as a service provider, helping studios to reach their goals with only one objective in mind: Quality!

 

We announced the news a few days ago to the Amplitude staff, and we were amazed to see how well they received it. You know why? Because it was SEGA, and we all have a good reason to love them.

As a customer I would have preferred Amplitude staying indie and without any ties to a big publisher.  I truely hope your future games are not effected in any way by this.

You know to keep raising the quality of our games, we would have had to focus on other things than development, in order to survive. Now we have a big brother to help us take care of that, so we can focus on what we love  and are good at :)

In my understanding it wont change the way they create their games. It'll just ease publishing, marketing, distribution etc.

Congratulations to everyone !


But I am concerned for something really important and that really trust all the amplitudes' games.

It's about the exhange between the community and the Studio. 

From the beginning the differents game have been developed with the help, and the notice of the community. They did a lot of contest, proposed a lot of solutions and idea, and answered to a lot of Poll.


What will be the evolution of that, now that you will be working with sega? Will you still do that? With the same dedication with the comunity?

While I absolutely welcome the idea this will give you guys bigger budgets, or atleast have to worry far less about marketing, do you have any reservations or concerns about how it might effect your DLC policy?

Creative Assembly makes great games, but over the years their DLC practices have steadily become more and more consumer unfriendly. How will you feel about any pressure Sega might put on you?

This is too bad. I've always bought Amplitude's releases the day of or during early access. Every DLC. Everything. Without a question in mind. But that's probably going to end now, since for years I've been trying to avoid giving SEGA any sort of meaningful profit for one of my purchases. It feels like a house just collapsed on all my excitement for Endless Space 2. Of all companies, why this one? :(

To anyone saying this won't effect the development, it will.  It may not happen quickly but SEGA will want games out and making money, so they will push the development team.  Then there is the big publisher trends like, cut this out of the game and make it into a pre-order item or ship the game while there are still bugs (Total War: Rome 2).

I am always cautious when an indie dev I love gets scooped up by one of the industry giants - SEGA in particular has had some issues in the past with creative control.


Paranoia aside - What does this mean for ES2 exactly? Will the budget increase as a result of the AAA comparison you're bound to receive now that you're with SEGA?

I definitely understand your concern. So you know it is understood that we will continue to work as we always did with our community, simply because that is the only way we want to make games :)

Good question, I think a lot of you out there are probably wondering what this means in terms of our relations with the community and the way we design games, the whole principle behind our Games2Gether.

We're still fully, absolutely committed to a development process that goes hand-in-hand with our community. This means that the G2G votes we had are still going to happen, moving forward. This means that the creation contests we have currently underway are still going on right now (if you want to enter, it's that way!). This means that our games will still feature votes, creation contests, and that in a general manner, we will keep on listening to all of you, because our games wouldn't be what they are now, our studio wouldn't be what it is without the involvement of the community.

Interesting news ^^

I hope it's for the best for you guys.

Now that you have a "big brother", things could go a bit smoother ... bigger and more ambitious projects, some extra DLCs (but not too many :) ), and so on.


One wish though : please do not allow the quality of your work to take a dive ! (erm ... Sonic ...)

And keep the community close to you !

First of all I am glad to hear again from you after so many days I realy was  worried  about you guys and girls  that something bad happened ( a attack by hackers or even worse things I dont wanted to think about )



I dont know how the bussiness works so I  hope you can wipe out some fears of mine.


Who actually makes the decisions when it comes to DLC content?


For example Creative Assambly realy enjoys a  biliteral reputation.


They are admired for their good games especialy those done in the past.


But nowadays they are also known as the biggest DLC cutthroats out there. Offering any tiny bit of content as fee-based DLCs. It escalated with with Shogun 2  and got only worse with Rome 2 and now they continuning this policy with Total War: Warhammer keyword "Blood for the Blood God"  DLC (it just adds blood effects)  and even  the Chaos Warrior Pack DLC controversy was also something many people ranted about and CA had to give in to some extend after it was all over the games related media.


I realy hope that those decision came from Creative Assambly itself and not from SEGA.


I know Dlc's are your products but I hope you will be able to follow your DLC policy like you did in the past. 


I think it was that policy what many of us loved and encouraged us to throw our money at you for all of your awesome expansions packs and founder packs.

I wish to buy  a copy of Endless Space2 on steam in the same way as other Endless series.

Japanese can not even see a page of Total War Shogun2 on steam!!!
