Hi everyone,

Some of you have grown suspicious that we might be working on a new project. Well, you were right!

We've been dreaming about making this game ever since we founded the studio. Our plans for this game are highly ambitious, and we finally feel that we're in a place to do it justice. We hope that everything we've learned from you guys and by making Endless Space and Endless Legend will help us to make our biggest and best game yet.

Today we are very, very excited to present to you our magnum opus: Humankind.

It's a historical turn-based strategy game in which you will be combining historical cultures to create your own civilization as you lead your people from the Bronze to the Modern age.

Here's what you can expect when you launch your very first game of Humankind:

  • One million civilizations - Combine 60 different historical cultures from accross the heritage of humanity. Begin as Ancient Egypt, then evolve into the Romans, the Khmers, or perhaps the Vikings—the choice is up to you. Each culture brings its own special gameplay layer, leading to near-endless outcomes.
  • More than history, your story -- You'll be facing real historical events & figures, making great scientific discoveries, and visiting the wonders of the world. Shape your people's beliefs and confront other players. Every decision you will make will add flourish to your story.
  • In the eyes of posterity– The journey matters more than destination. Fame is a new and unifying victory condition. Every great deed you accomplish, every moral choice you make, every battle won will build your fame and leave a lasting impact on the world. The player with the most fame will win the game.
  • A tactical world – Show off your tactical skills by mastering terrain elevation, city-building, full tactical battles and warfare. Choose the high ground for your city, and it will be harder to siege. Deploy your archers in the woods to avoid stampeding horsemen. Call upon your allies to help you in times of need and transform an epic battle into a full-scale multiplayer world war!

These features are, of course, just the tip of the iceberg and we can't wait to reveal more to you as we go on this journey together! The game will be coming out in 2020, you can follow along here, on the game Steam page, or on the official website for updates & news.

We're also on all socials with the username @humankindgame.

Finally, we also want to express that we're also still working on Endless stuff, and that there's lots of exciting things to be expecting on that front as well! Not least starting with the next major expansion for Endless Space 2, more on that here for those who missed it.

Thank you all for your support.

Hope you enjoy!

Very bold move guys.

The challenge now is to inject enough creativity and fantasy into all of this.

Otherwise it could look like a Civ-Like, which would be sad for a studio as creative as Amplitude.

I clearly recognize Endless Legend features. That's fine.  :)

For the negative kids: Assuming the game will be bad before you even try it or has seen it's finished state, is pretentious and disingenious. It doesn't serve to give feedback and fair opinion to the Devs, which doesn't help them at all. I'd advise you to either give it a try or watch someone play it once it's finished and released. Before you start judging it without solid information.

To the track of this game, Humankind.

From the looks of it. It seems they are attempting to take the idea of "Civilization" and significantly improving the core concept of the idea what it means to create your very own Civilization, People and History. While keeping the Civ Management intact and 4x, but making sure it is strategical and heavily focused on the idea of "Playing a Civ Game exactly how you want it" without sacrificing basic concepts and gameplay mechanics. Additionally, i hope they keep the core mechanics and concepts of EL, as they are fundamentally useful to Humankind, but also not making them too alike.

Their idea seems to be recreating the enjoyment of what it was to play Civilization, before it got vastly greedy, unbalanced and not so enjoyable anymore. They mention this is something they have long wanted to make. And that, makes me very curious. Cause that means their every attempt is to make this game the best of the best, among their releases. While it MAY NOT be a Endless serie. Forget that and allow them to innovate and step outside their safety box, so that they can try something new (altough perhaps not entirely new) and find inspiration. Think of Developers like Digital Artists, except you can get immersed and play around in their Arts. May not be entirely accurate. But somewhat.

Regarding to ideas or improvements of current/previous releases, which may or may not affect Humankind:

Advanced Diplomacy System
Battle System similar to EL (significantly more tactical)
Resources aside of regular 4x being key
Units should be customizeable and represent your Civ Design (If you play Samurai Rome, look like that imagination)
Multiplayer System should be advanced, allow for hot-seat and ironbulwark for no desynchs on Client-side/server side
A large plethora of options and methods of making/designing your own Units and Civs (no 10 options and future DLC increases it by 10-20 options)
Map World should be random within the Users fiddling of Map World Creation Options (rivers 40% increase to 80% example)
Win Conditions should have classic Turn-Based Conditions (Conquer, Domination, Unify, Tech and Score example) and maybe more
Tech Tree should take some time and is affected by Game Options before Map Launch how long it takes
Map should have many luxuries, landmarks and etc like previous EL but more and not so Real-World applicable (Alien Ship Crashshite example)
There should be Neutral Tribes/Civs and Hostile ones roaming and messing with you and others and evolves just as you and others do

About now i'm empty of ideas for the time being, i might have more in an actual feedback page of this. This was all a blarf of me out of concern for it. I'm very curious and look forward to further details about the game. Ciao!

*when I read about building your own civilization using layers of different cultures leading to near-ENDLESS outcomes*

First Thought: "Time to take over the world with the Holy Roman Korean Empire of the Rising Sun."

But really, solid trailer, banger music. Looking forward to more!

One of the things I don't like in Civ is the micro-management of all units across the world map. Having them group up in armies is a huge QoL improvement.

Several people have also said they'd like to see improved diplomacy mechanics. Knowing that EL had it's quirks in this respect, can we hope to see a vastly improved system?

I couldn't agree more. I liked how the combat system offered some level of tactical control, but generally resolved much faster than a full-on tactical system would. It didn't break too much from the strategic layer and that for me is its objective.

I felt like, after the various add-ons and the CP, diplomacy was maybe the one remaining weak spot in the game. It wasn't bad, just not as fleshed out as some other stuff.

So, yeah, I am very much looking forward to learning more about ... everything. If Amplitude does this even remotely right, count me in. Best of success with this @devteam!

If this game is civ but better, I'll be so psyched. Civ just isn't that exciting for me anymore.

very exited by the looks of it, but historical stuff is not very appealing to me plus there are already a bunch of those games in existece.

one of the best parts about the endless games was the original endless universe.

but if you guys give me the opportunity to create a abradolf lincler kind of civilization i will buy it :D

Even if I'm still hoping for an Endless Legend 2 someday or any form of fantasy (pseudo fantasy and sci-fi) from Amplitude and I've never felt much appeal for historical games (why my interest for Civ quickly fell despite how good it can be), but I'm definitely gonna give this a try! If it's like an upgraded EL gameplay wise then I'm sure to have fun with it, and if this can be a stepping-stone for how a EL2 could be then it'll make me more excited playing it.

Given how much it seems like Civ, being able to be compared and competed against it more than EL could, perhaps this might be the game that'll actually get Amplitude greatly recognized and have the guys at Civ starting to shiver in their boots. Kinda like the Cities Skylines vs Simcity and Skylines winning a lot of Simcity's audience on the idea of trying out new ideas and innovating things, adding features and changing things that was sorely needed, instead of being stagnant due to no true competitors giving other alternatives for their audience. Competition can be important for a genre to evolve afterall, which is kinda lacking for 4X games.

Is it too late the change the title of the game to Endless Humans?

A game like this, with a focus on evolving civilizations, could give more focus to some of the historically important, but rarely seen in CIV, cultures. the Kushan, The Khazars, the Olmec, the Gokturks, etc. I really hope to see that in both the main and the expansions!

It may be a bit late to say this, but I really like the look of "Humankind" and the idea of playing a culture instead of a nation and the possibillity to change (or develop) to an other one.

Its also very good to make your own history, but how could "historical events, figures, scientific breakthroughs" etc. fit in this setting? Will e.g. Newton be English when no English culture is present (in the game I'm playing) or will his "laws of motion" (given to be present in the game) be made by an other scientist of a different name (like Meyer, Moore, Wang, Ivanow etc.)? Or will I have MY own "historical events....." made by people of my culture (and same with the cultures present in the game I'm playing)? Questions questions.......

But nevertheless I am fascinated of "Humankind" and the ideas behind it. I'll keep an eye on it because it's just what I was waiting for!!!

AFAIK this is confirmed in the Polygon article. Armies move around as one stack and unstack upon entering the battle. Battles will still be fought on the actual cvampaign map. So yes, the EL system is still in place. I read that they will refine it and give us more control of the battles.
