Could you join a save and reiterate which circumstances trigger these stutters, player1?

Thanks! :)

I have a similar issue but only when I am playing big maps with 8 factions.  I am running a dual-core i5 @ 2.50 GHz.  I believe the problem stems from the clock speed not being able to keep up with the computing.  I seem to see the same pattern when people discuss this issue.  People are running systems that barely meet the clock speed requirement (i.e. 2.4 GHz, 2.5 GHz).  I strongly suspect this is the root of the issue as it only occurs for after a specific range of turns (mine starts around 90-100 consistently).  When I encounter these issues, I check my Task Manager/Resource Monitor and every time it shows high CPU usage.

It is also worth noting that I did not experience this on one occasion (under the specific rules of Huge Map + 8 Factions).  This was when I played through as the Cultists. In this play through I never experienced even the slightest stutter.

Hi,

Could you provide us with your output_log.txt file, a dxdiag report and one of your diagnostics*.html files? Do you have any improvements if you change the graphics settings?

Any update on this?  I found a few more people on the steam forums having the same issue and have sent them this direction.

I am having this problem as well. I was playing a large map with 6 players and the stuttering occurs after about 60 turns. Ending a turn slows the stuttering but after panning or zooming it quickens again. My rig setup is i7 4770k, 2x R9 Nano, 16gb RAM. The Steam forum community led me here and there are many who are having the same problem. Please fix this Amplitude, I love this game.

Bought this game a few days ago in the steam sale and I have the same issue. A game that ran without a hitch started stuttering around the time I hit turn 60.

Relevant info:

- Normal map size (random -> smaller islands), 6 factions, only my island and a bit of another explored so far

- Win7 x64 Home Premium

- Intel i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

- Turning the graphics options down to "potato" doesn't help

- Windows Resource Monitor shows no excessive CPU or IO usage

- Tried the various workarounds already mentioned in this thread

- Base game without expansions or other nonfree DLC.

- DxDiag.zip

Savegame where everything is still fine:

Mezari - Turn 40

output_log_turn40.txt

Diagnostics_turn40.zip

Savegame with stuttering:

Mezari - Turn 74

output_log_turn74.txt

Diagnostics_turn74.zip

Now to an idea that I had:

I noticed that the save that has the stuttering shows the blue AI faction (Wild Walkers...I checked with the console commands) is listed as "Playing" during my turn instead of "Ready" as the others (see screenshot). This doesn't go away (same as the stuttering) when I do nothing on my turn for 10+ minutes, which makes me wonder whether that faction's AI got "stuck" on something and that causes the stuttering. I would have tested further, but unfortunately there's no "kill faction X" command.

Any further comments and advice to get this solved welcome!

80-90C is IMHO a lot!

My OCed 4790K is hovering around 70-75C when I run the Intel Burn Test, and way below that in games.

The stuttering is then probably due to the CPU being throttled in order to keep the temps somewhat in check.

Can you perhaps check that your cooling solution is running properly?

Adding my experience to this. One turn everything's fine, next turn I have stuttering every second. Mine's not even during winter.

Specs are

Edition - Windows 10 Home; Version - 1703; OS Build 15063.674

Screen Resolution - 1440x2560

GPU - R9 390; CPU - i5 4460 @ 3.2GHz; 8GB Ram (single channel); game is installed on a Samsung 850 Evo ssd (which isn't my boot drive);

Game version 1.5.14 S3 (64-Bit)

I uploaded a video to gfycat https://gfycat.com/gifs/detail/DisloyalJollyItaliangreyhound. I'll note that this issue does not require me to be moving the map around, I just felt that that's a good way for me to show the stuttering.

Troubleshooting I've attempted: Restarting game. Restarting computer. Updating Drivers. Lowering Graphics settings to minimum. Going to save 'Pre-Bug 107', taking different actions and ending the turn (I tried doing no actions but one of my armies is queued to move and Idk how to/if i can cancel it).

For example, when I switched to my other save (normal/6 players), which is late game turn 202 winter, there is no shuttering. With frame limiter, fps is constant 31fps (+/-0.1fps).

While in my current game at 88 turn winter, there is shuttering (normal/8 players).

I just finished a 200 turn 6-player/large with no winter stutter. Yay. The usual late-game slowness and input lag but nevermind, at least no stutter!

Looks like 6 players max for me, it's not ideal but it's a workaround. What a mysterious problem.

Hi all.

Perhaps a quarter of all the games I play in Endless Legend at some point begin to get this horrible stuttering problem. Every second or so the animations, the camera and pretty much everything else apart from the mouse cursor freeze for a moment before returning to normal for another second, before freezing again, and returning to normal. And so on.

Apparently this is a pretty long-standing issue. Here are some other discussions about the stuttering (there are likely more that I've missed):

I've no idea exactly what causes this issue. Many people say that it occurs particularly after several hundred turns have passed, in large maps with many players and/or many cities. However, my most recent game has only six empires on a standard map, and I'm only 34 turns into the game, but regardless the stuttering has begun, and rendered the game almost impossible to play.

Any updates on this fairly significant performance issue? I've loved this game for 200 hours, but if this stuttering is a semi-regular occurrence then I feel I'll quickly stop playing without some sort of fix or fruitful advice.

My game runs fine in summer, but in winter I have terrible stutter. GPU load varies wildly and it's the same stutter when zoomed out to the strategic view or zoomed in to a blank undiscovered part of the map.

I'm wondering if it's the wind and snow effect that's causing it - is there any way to turn these visual effects off? I already know it's winter cos everything turned white, I don't need wind and snow particles if they make the game nearly unplayable.

My computer has a GTX970, an i7 cpu, and win7 x64. For testing I set everything to minimum quality/off and changed EndlessLegend.exe process priority to realtime. CPU load is around 15%, GPU fluctuates from 10% to 40%. Yet even with this low utilisation I get stutter.

Don't know if it helps. But I would upgrade OS to windows 10. Your programs will still be there. I could imagine windows 10 support is better. Other possible solutions could be to get more actual drivers. And in steam you could try to right click on Endless Legend and go to preferences. There are some options, that could be useful, too. What about your main memory ? 4, 8, 16 GB ?

I would really advise on staying on Windows 7 or 8.1.

There are still lots of incompatibilities with Windows 10, even if Microsoft won't admit that.

The GTX 970 would be plenty (and even then some more) to run EL. Are your drivers up-to-date ?

I'm using 362.00, not quite up-to-date but recent stable version.

Attached save is also interesting for another reason, it's a scattered preset with no red metal on the main continent or in the market. I don't know if that was supposed to happen smiley: eek

I'm having this issue too. I got Windows 8.1, i7 3770, gtx 760. I got to turn 370, now it's in winter and I just made an alliance so now I can see nearly the entire normal size map. But there's a constant stutter which seems to happen exactly every 1 second. Been trying all kinds of different graphics settings but nothing cures the stutter (framerate is ok) I had tried restarting the game (it was using 2.5 gb of ram) but that didn't help, I tried restarting the PC but that didn't help. Anything specific I can try or should I post logs or something?

Update: I played for a few more turns and the stuttering stopped after that.

Again more stuttering this time after loading a save that was at turn 119 (I don't remember it stuttering before I quit last time), I don't even have much vision over the map. I guess maybe if I take a few turns it might clear up but it would be better if it didn't start stuttering in the first place, I don't even see any reason why it should be...

My own investigation in stuttering, during winter time, showed that I get it if in-game frame limiter is active.

For example, if I limit frame rate to 30, instead of constant 30fps I get it to fluctuate between 28-30fps, and each time it dips to 28fps, winter storm freezes for microsecond.

On the other hand, if I disable frame limited (set to 200), then it fluctuates between 50-53fps, and I do not experience shuttering (or maybe it is less apparent).

System specs:

Asus G551JW-CN009D laptop

*15.6" Full HD IPS (1920x1080)

*Core i7-4720HQ 2.6GHz

*GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5

*8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 128GB SSD (game on HDD)

*Windows 8.1 Pro

Playing on Beautiful present, with depth of field disabled, vsync off and frame rate limited to 30fps (to reduce fan noise and keep laptop cooler).

Now, looking into this, the issue is not uniform.

For example, when I switched to my other save (normal/6 players), which is late game turn 202 winter, there is no shuttering. With frame limiter, fps is constant 31fps (+/-0.1fps).

While in my current game at 88 turn winter, there is shuttering (normal/8 players).

Are you able to reproduce the stuttering every time when loading from the same savegame file (e.g. turn 88 winter) ?

I.m thinking that the game may be actually doing some computing / prefetching in the background at certain times, which would explain why a few turns later, the stuttering is gone ...

Just for a comparison, I.m experiencing some heavy frame rate drops at the beginning of an Euro Truck Sim drive, though my system is plenty for that game (i7-4790k @ 4.8ghz, r9-290 oc'ed, 32gb ram). But after 5-10 seconds or so it gets back to normal, probably as the game has (pre-)loaded some traffic / textures / objects in the background.

Yes 100% of time.

And it is not temporary. If I just do nothing for 5min on that turn, it would stutter for whole time.

I do rememer that AI units move at the same time as player units.

Could not moved minor or AI faction unit produce the shuttering, by checking every fraction of second if there is somethong nearby for them to react?

Not sure exactly how AI movement behavior works.

They can't be moving for the whole time, can they ? ... it must be something else.

Perhaps a dev can have another look at your savegame file, and do a live debug/profiler on it ?

Now, same game, turn 139, no shutter during winter.

Verified with msi afterburner, that when game is limited to 30fps, that dips are only around +/-0.2fps.

There must be some in-game reason that produces shuttering sometimes during turns.

From hands-on experience at work.

But YMMV, it all depends a lot on the actual system configuration, drivers, and which exact applications you use. I can say, I never really had any issues with Windows 7 (as opposed to Vista which was a mess), and 8.1 is working pretty fine for me too. If 10 "floats your boat", then by all means use it and good for you smiley: smile

Then again, this is off-topic.

4 years after release and there's still stuttering issues, regardless of hardware.

Endless Space 2 also suffers the same problems as Endless Legend, be it framerate or stuttering.

What's the Unity version of these games?  When was the last time the engine was updated?

There is no reason both games should be suffering identical issues unless it's something on the engine's end.. or a core issue with a certain aspect of development.

When I can delve back into ES1 after all these years, I hope to compare it too, but I'm very disappointed about this.

Very high end PC here and still having this issue. Looking at my Resource monitor, I see only 1 core taking most of the CPU actions. I've tried running Intel Turbo Boost Max Technologty 3.0 and that moves some of the excess CPU load to another core but the stutter persists. I often ran into this issue on my older laptop and I figured my hardware was the issue, but that should no longer be the case.

I have this problem often.  It usually only lasts these days for a few turns though.  Still it's difficult to provide input when it is.  I've provided a load of debug logs files in the past, and it seems it didn't do much to help.  Do the devs still need files for when this happens?

I am a steam subscriber.   I have the latest non-beta version.  Today I played with a friend for a long while.   For about four or five turns it started hiccuping.  It then went away.

That bug and fps drop is an Unity Engine bug when game try to load more assets in one time that is possible in engine it will start chocking ( the result is fps drop, sttuter etc ) until unity will not fix it ( because the devs cannot change unity code itself ) that bug will apeear ( 4 years already huh? ) . There is a method to make it not happen but somewhat hackish - download cheat engine select Endless Legend enable speedhack and set the game speed 0.5. Animation will get slower by half unity will stop chocking travel time will go up 2 times the rest will have the same speed as usual ( animations seems to be a problem game is trying to launch too many sparkling crap in the same time result is visible :P )

Tried mentioned solution (speedhack) but unfortunately the microstutter every 2-3 second still occurs. Any news from Amplitude about the fix ?

Wow! It really helped. No stuttering. Great.

But also - now I'm confused. Why great modders can fix this stuttering issue (without access to game code) and Amplitude cannot ?

0Send private message

This modder DOES have access to the game code.

If you look at the description of the mod, he says he does and why he can do so much more than with just normal modding capability.

As to why the devs did not fix so many issues I can only guess. But I'll give it a go.

1) EL launched with no real AI. As in none of the games races knew that they were different to the others. Amplitude then proceeded to build an AI into the game and have often talked about the fact that there were afraid to change things because other things would be broken after a certain point.

2) Cost of fixes versus new content. This is something I really hate but it is reality. Its much easier to add new content than to fix and perfect your old content that less and less people are playing.

3) Endless Space 2 happened and all the studio's effort went into that game.

I'm probably missing other things that happened like departures from the studio etc.
