@Myrddin... I don't think so... The issue is regarding UNity engine and linux, not Mac-OS...

We are aware of the fact that the Linux community wants to see Endless Legend ported to this OS: we have seen all the topics and read your emails / tweets / Facebook messages.

We have nothing new to communicate on this matter at the moment, which is why I am closing this thread. We will let you know if we have any news, but being rude to us or spamming us is certainly not going to make us take decisions or work on anything faster.

Thank you.

Let's avoid the capitals, profanity and triple-posting please.

Fact is that yes, there was a vote, but that no, Steam OS didn't win. Steam Workshop got more than 6 times more votes than Steam OS, so Thursday we're releasing an update with Steam Workshop integration.

THERE WON'T BE A LINUX VERSION

Enthusiastic Linux gamers are still hoping, however, especially as the Linux port was started and was looking good but ultimately dropped due to the Windows and Mac OS clients being so darn buggy. Plus, Amplitude had the audacity to tease Linux users with this very flawed poll at a later date:

I'm adding my half-vote.

I'm currently using a second Windows laptop just for gaming - dual booting is a pain.

Half-vote because DRM is a show-stopper anyway.

I would love a Linux port too. I understand that it can be a somewhat difficult port but it would be much appreciated.

As someone who owns quite a number of Endless games, but has switched full-time and permanently to Linux (from previously dual booting), a Linux port is something I'd very much like to see, and I'll be swinging my G2G points in that direction any time I think of it.

Humbly joining the party. I'm one of the few people on Linux who doesn't own the game yet has access to this forum. I'd be happy to be a proud owner, if I could play it.

Hi all,

We read regular posts about the Linux version of the game, so I suppose it deserves a little update.

A few months ago, we worked on the Linux version of the game to try to produce a build. We have been quite busy with other tasks, so it is no complete yet, and there are remaining porting issues specific to Linux. Actually, porting the game is not as easy rebuilding with Unity (the technology we use) in Linux. There are platform specific considerations (file management, rendering) and also middleware which must be adapted (sound, video playback). It is not impossible and can be done, but we are not specialists of Linux, so it means a lot of time spent on this. And sometimes there is nothing we can do to fix an issue (as in the Mac pause menu) until the technology we use is upgraded or new drivers are released.

The other consideration is the overhead a new platform will bring. I assume Linux users want the same quality of service than the PC and Mac users. If we add a new platform, it means 50% more management time for the builds, QA, and technical support. We are a small studio, and our resources are not infinite. Is it better to have engineers and producers focus on new cool content for the current customers or to have the Linux version ? I think the answer is obvious for us now.

So the bottom line is that the Linux version of Endless Legend is still on hold until further notice.

Thanks!

Any good news? I still cannot play and I would love to! smiley: frown

Yeah, apple said with making swift/metal open source they were bringing them to Linux as well, something about them on Linux. But if amplitude have a standard with the linux versions through swift/metal for the issues AmpliMath mentioned "platform specific considerations (file management, rendering) and also middleware which must be adapted (sound, video playback)." If there Mac and Linux versions were both able to use swift/metal it might significantly reduce "management time for the builds, QA, and technical support" Hope that was coherent. smiley: smile

Not really knowing anything about game development or programming, and probably some training involved but does apple's announcement at wwdc about making "swift/Metal" open source change anything?

Jojo, hi... Wine is *not* a Windows emulator... It tries to mimick the programmer interface for various versions of windows OS, but this is always, not an uphill struggle, a cliff uphill struggle... My experience with wine, for example, with TES Oblivion, was to get purple water, giant trees, and it took a heck of a pain to fix at least a little of those problems...

There is the possibility, yes, to create a new partition, and boot a windows install from that partition, or use a virtual os install... But, well... bleargh...

Wine is good, for example, to get that old MS Access application that you still run in your office to run on linux machines...

Wine has an "appDB" database that shows how well an application run using wine, and this is the result for endless legend is "silver", meaning, yes, it may run, but have quirks. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=31305

How long will it be until the Linux client releases? I would much rather play Endless Legend sooner as opposed to later, and I will, of course, pay full price for the privilege. It is the only game by Amplitude that I am interested in so far, and I would love to experience it at 3840 x 2160 (or 2560 x 1440 if need be) with my trusty GTX 980. I have watched hours of gameplay on YouTube and yearn for this game, but Amplitude has taken Linux users for quite a ride up until now...
