The tactics you speak of do not exist in CIV5 when it comes to combat. I have seen little difference between the easiest and hardest setting when it comes to combat. All things being the same, the "tactical" A.I. in CIV5 is brain dead. When playing another person, I can see your point. In CIV5, the "setup" is before combat. In ES, you can make adjustments during combat. But inherently, you are correct, they are very similar. I too am looking forward to EL. There is a vid that was posted today that showed more gameplay during the interview, and it had a brief glimpse of combat. It looked fun.

I wasn't really referring to the strength of the AI in my post - your criticisms are totally valid - so just assume I am speaking about playing against another human for the sake of the argument. Where you say you "agree" what I was saying was the opposite (if I understand you correctly): civ 5 does have tactics via unit positioning and order of fire (and I think ZoC awareness comes into play here), and ES does not - it's just a random guessing game where you can do nothing but *hope* your card counters your opponent's. ES's system is much more similar to the old stacking system of Civ 4, but with a bit more control via the cards. It's basically smashing two armies together so unit composition is the most critical aspect, and really everything else is out of your control. Whereas in Civ 5 positioning and rate of fire are nearly as important.

In any case, I'm not looking for an argument (I just wanted to make myself clear). We can look forward to EL together with great anticipation!smiley: smile

Yes, but that tactics you employ against another human and in return the same can be used against you. When I play the A.I., I can't even tell you how often they place archers in front of swordsmen, or cavalry unit within range of the spear/pike, and let's not even talk about naval or arial combat. But anyways, I'm not trying to argue so much as have a discussion. Having said that, I am really excited by EL.

Well, it looks like Amplitude made quite an impression at PAX:

"The highlight of PAX for me was watching the Amplitude Studios designer (Endless Space, etc) demoing Endless Legend to a bunch of Firaxis devs".

That was my post, and yeah, I was at PAX East as an exhibitor/merch booth grunt/engineer extraordinaire for one of the musical acts. Got to hang out with Kaboomer a little bit (sorry I didn't have time to say 'hi' Steph'nie smiley: frown ), exchange business cards, pinch an Endless Legend poster and watch about a dozen minutes total of the game being demonstrated. Between Endless Legend and Firaxis' new Civ announcement I'm one extremely happy camper.

@Kareal - Thanks for the writeup! Exactly what I was hoping for smiley: smile

@The-Cat-O-Nine-Tails - Cheers for the link! I just noticed that the IGN preview article was written by Rowan Kaiser, a frequent co-host of Three Moves Ahead podcast, which recently made mention of Endless Legend. I don't doubt that they will be devoting a full episode to EL once it's out (either gold or EA) so keep your ears peeled. (TMA is a great strategy game podcast, btw, if anyone's interested.)

You mean the solitary pic on Amplitude's Twitter page showing people playing EL on a laptop conveniently not facing the camera wasn't enough for you? smiley: stickouttongue

I'm sure the game will get some press over the next week or so. Usually only the big titles get "live" coverage during a show...

I got some hands on at PAX east, sadly the Dev at the booth had to run away and do something right as I sat down so I didn't get any explanations.

Overall the game looked like a very solid Endless Space\HoMM mashup with a few Civ elements.

Tiles have production based on terrain, there are a number of special tiles for boosted resources. Manual combat zooms in to tactical combat, there was an auto combat option as well similar to ES. (I also managed to crash the game by winning a fight with only my hero alive.)

There is both a tech tree(3 tiers of techs which can be taken in any order within a tier, I think it was ~12 techs to unlock tier 2) and a prestige 'policy' type selection which seemed to give empire wide bonuses.

I enjoyed the quest system but it almost felt like I was getting quests too fast, though I did just have a hero running from one ruins to another.

I found a quest which required a hero to run to 4 ruins with a short turn limit and received a piece of equipment at each. A second quest required a lv4 hero to go to a specific spot to wake up and defeat a creature(I think) I stopped before my hero got that far.

Edit: One more thing, the map seemed to be broken up into regions, some regions had 'minor faction' inhabitants that implied you could get something from them if you founded a city in their region.

But it certainly is good reading for the team's morale!

You have raised the hopes of a lot of gamers. I understand the pression you may feel, because release a "good" product is no longer an option smiley: wink

But don't worry, we'll be a lot to help you as much as we can (And I'm not only speaking about the VIPs).

What you need to remember : the game felt really stable, so your reputation of releasing excellent products is safe smiley: smile.

Amplitude for the win !

In Amplitude we trust... hum... I like that one smiley: stickouttongue

I was really hoping for a flood (or at least a tricklesmiley: wink) of new information or gameplay videos from the convention, considering the nearness of Early Access. Did anyone go that would like to share their impressions? Were there any announcements?

I managed to meet Ben and Stephanie at the PAX East booth on Sunday. They were gracious enough to let me demo Endless Legend. Sorry my Alienware laptop troubleshooting skills were not up to snuff! I am a shame to IT specialists everywhere smiley: cry I blame those lemon Halls!

I know they were interviewed on TwitchTV during the show. Maybe someone can dig up thier interview?

In any case it was great to see you both and the game. Looking forward to the game smiley: smile

Are you talking about the Twitch thing? It was only for Dungeon of the Endless and I have the link here: it's at 02:20:45.

Note that I'm not speaking because I completely lost my voice with all the talking at the booth. :x I was with Kaboomer, game designer on Endless Legend.
