I think war would be a lot more immersive if war had an impact on the cities the troops came from. Approval/morale would go down as troops were lost, and as territory is lost morale/approval would drop empire wide. There could be modifiers that change the loss/gain values for different races. For example, the Necrophages wouldnt have any morale loss for troops killed or territory lost.

Edit: This probably goes without saying, but the inverse would also be true, you gain territory, you gain approval/morale, you win battles, you gain morale, etc etc.

I think "war wariness" is an opportunity to expand the approval/diplomacy aspects of this game beyond the current implementation where "expansion disapproval" is the only factor.

Some Ideas:

  • Length of time at war decreases approval
  • Number of Empires at war with decreases approval
  • Declaring war with an empire that you had a positive relationship recently with would decrease approval immediately.
  • Necrophages would be immune

I like your ideas, Propbuddha. Big thumbs up! smiley: approval

Here's my modification, based on yours:

1- Being at war will cause 5 disapproval in all cities every 13 turns when you are at war with the ((same faction)). So this effect will occur separately for each faction you are at war with (if you're at war with many factions). This effect occurs ONLY IF YOU are the one who declared the war in the first place This gives weaker factions a chance to fight back defensively. Otherwise, the weaker or smaller factions have an unfair disadvantage...

2- Declaring war on a friendly or allied empire >> causes large disapproval, based on what agreements that are cancelled with them.

3-Necrophages immune to all this (same as your idea)

War weariness would be a welcome addition to the game. Those pleas for peace would become much more tempting when you have to worry about your approval plummeting.

And backstabbing anybody should always be a risky move. Otherwise, players will never fully trust their allies.

I think this is a great idea, other things to consider is that allies in a war together would grow closer, but if one drops out that could put the relationship on ice, or worse. Also factions who are not allied with each other but a war with the same faction would be more likely to have positive relations with each other. Necrophages excluded.

Approval bonuses based on empires at war would be a nice addition, but all of these suggestions are based on negative bonuses, how about some positive bonuses for, say, a new ally you have found, victory at a major battle, capturing cities, etc.

I'm not too sure about positive bonuses based on war. The only fair and balanced approach I can think of is something like this (in addition to my previous reply):

Winning battles without losing any units OR Capturing enemy cities >> each will reduce your war weariness penalty by 5. For example, you're Vaulters. You've been at war with Broken Lords for 25+ turns so you have a total of 10 disapproval on all your cities. You win a battle without any of your troops dying >> you regain 5 approval. Then you capture a city >> you regain another 5 approval. Whenever you regain approval by war achievement, it will reset the War Weariness timer. So after another say, 12-13 turns without war achievement, you get 5 war weariness disapproval again. It makes war mongers want to to be more efficient.

Sounds realistic, eh? smiley: wink

I hope they find a way to program something this complex. would be awesome

EDIT: btw, all these numbers are hypothetical. I'm sure balancing might change things so that for example, war weariness disapproval is -5 every 10 turns (rather than 13 as I first suggested)... that is ofc assuming the idea is adopted to begin with
