If I'm moving a crossbow unit into melee range of another ranged unit. After advancing them adjacent to enemy units I expect them to attack the closest unit to gain the point blank bonus. They will consistently attack the units behind the front line.

If you don't specify targets archers tend to target the weakest units, not the closest. If you want to specify a move then target a specific unit put in your move order, then hold ctrl to specify a a target.

The ctrl-click didn't seem to be working.

Maybe there was a level difference in the enemy's army - they were all hurnas.

I think it's LeftCtrl only.   I keep forgetting this (being left handed), but I checked the controls last night for something, and it reminded me the Control-Click and Alt-Click battle commands seem to be LeftCtrl and LeftAlt only.  If you move a ranged unit and then Ctrl-Click a target, you should see a white movement arrow coming from your unit to their destination, and then a red arrow coming from the destionation to the target.
