Minor suggestions to gameplay

Just like to start off by saying that as a new player this game is incredible, the lore and quests set this miles apart from CIV and turn it into a really interesting game. But, as a new player I also have a minor suggestion to the game interface to help new players grasp the concepts for easily.

1) Change "upkeep" to "revenue", in the english language upkeep already suggests a "loss of money" and seeing a city with "-10 upkeep" comes across as the city makes money each turn, I appreciate the issue is incredibly small ( I think it's testament to how good your game is!) but the whole "upkeep" concept is just confusing from the start. Researching a tech that says "-1 revenue for each city" is far easier to comprehend than "-1 from your upkeep" which technically states that I'd make money....

Agreed, if you're gonna use 'upkeep', then buildings should increase upkeep! It costs more to keep it running! So for example, the building in the above post SHOULD say either "+10 upkeep" OR "-10 revenue".

I actually wish when building anything instead of -1 upkeep they changed it to +1 upkeep, it took me a game or two, to realize that building all those buildings was taking away from income, not adding to it.

Wait, so let me understand this correctly...

Are you trying to say that for example this building:

will cost me 7 Dust each turn when built?

If yes, then... I've been playing this game wrong for the whole time!

omg same here I always thought - upkeep is a good thing my whole life. Upkeep means the price of running something

like my car has an upkeep of 4 cans of oil every 3 months. So -upkeep should make things easier not harder.

I think this is a straight up typo / bug

Yes, trueplayer, indeed it will! I went bankrupt in an early game before I realised that my income went down every time I built a thing...

It's a language barrier thing. They're all native French speakers. I'll bring this to their attention.

Yes in general the wording for a lot of effects could use some clarifications. For upkeep you could maintain the format by writing +7 TO CITY UPKEEP, for example.

Some other confusing ones:

+40 XP WHEN RECRUITING UNITS ON UNITS

I would suggest something like +40XP ON UNITS WHEN RECRUITED instead.

+10% ON APPROVAL (FERVENT)

This is a weird use of brackets that confused me. +10% ON APPROVAL: FERVENT.

+2 ARMY UNIT SLOT(S) ON EMPIRE

+2 GARRISON UNIT SLOT(S) ON EMPIRE

This is really confusing... first of all why the (S)? +2 ARMY/GARRISON SIZE would probably explain it better. I do not think it is necessary to write out ON EMPIRE since the research does not unlock any buildings that need construction.

+1 EXTRA EQUIPMENT SLOT ON UNITS

The EXTRA is redundant.

-2 FROM NEW ARMY SLOTS UPKEEP

I am actually still not sure exactly what this means.

For some techs (e.g. Mercenary Corps) that require deeper explanation, I think the explanatory text should not be in caps. So: "UNLOCKS PRIVATEERS. Armies composed entirely of... "

The Unskilled Labor and Organised Labor techs also need better explaining. I thought I was making a building that would then enable the production of stockpiles. I am no saying the mechanic is bad, I just want to understand it from the text. Also it should mention how large the stockpiles are.

I've gotten used to the "ON EMPIRE" or "ON UNITS" or "ON CITY", but probably it could be clearer? Having "on empire" seems a bit better than nothing cause otherwise I'm left slightly uncertain whether something is really a global, passive bonus. Probably if it said "ON ALL CITIES" it would be clearer in some cases though, and unlocking the market "for your empire" would be more grammatically correct then unlocking it "on empire". smiley: smile

For the longest time I had no idea what "ON EXPLOITATION" meant. There's still a few building I'm not sure exactly what they do because I read the description and it seemed weak so I never researched or built them in any of my games.

I believe that the upkeep costs for armies increases as you increase the maximum capacity of units for that army.

That doesn't seem right...that would mean if you don't use the benefit the tech could end up being worse than useless! smiley: frown

Yes the "-X from city upkeep" is cost to your bottom line.

Well yes, the game has always had it so that a stack of 6 units is less expensive than 6 stacks of 1 unit, I suppose its to cut down on rapid expansion perhaps? Or maybe to just generally keep the warmongers in check early game.
