Simple deterministic

Battle outcome is always predictable. No tactics, all strategy. E.g.: chess stratego

Simple random

Unit strength comparison plus a Random variable added to the mix. Still no tactics. E.g.: Risk Endless space Civilization

Tactical turn based

Units can move on a map. Added extra factors (terrain resistance, attack, defense) Usually some rock paper scissors mechanism. Allows simple tactics like swarming a unit. Example: master of orion master of magic endless legend

Tactical real time

As above but real time. Outcome affected by micromanaging. E. G.: Dune 2 command&conquer warcraft

wargame

Includes more complex variables like initiative morale supply weather. More complex tactics like flanking and pincing allowed. E.g total war panzer general

static Rpg

Turn based. No map only front row back row army positioning. Only allows targetting and attack selection. Basic tactics. E.g final fantasy, dungeon master

From this (flawed) classification, what is your favourite system?

Currently I am enjoying the rpg a lot. I love hidden gems like ogre battle or disciples II. I love having tons of unit types that can be upgraded. I think heroes of Might and Magic does that v well. It is simply awesome to have so many types of units. Would love more unit richness in Endless legends II smiley: smile

Both of the extremes can be pleasant, I enjoy both chess and the Wargame franchise. Though for a 4X the turn-based tactical system has got to be the best as it allows for unpredictability and planning.

Allows for better tactics to win battles not overwhelming number, use of terrain, proper implement of weapons systems (ie. Roman legions, the best infantry killing machine in pre-modern History)

Most games I play and enjoy are in the middle range:

Tactical Turn-based

but I do like Simple Random and RPG as well

A little bit of everything really. There are some games where RPG elements will also affect the strategy element. One notable example is Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes. The skills and equipment you give your hero can be game-changing, especially magical skills allowing the hero to cast City Spells.

These tend to be my favorite, although they are somewhat rare... hopefully becoming more popular?

Another recent favorite of mine, Pandora: First Contact. I played a torrent version for a while, and I really wanna buy it soon. How would you classify Pandora?
