Whoa - soooo very late to this party, but on the topic of lane travel:

I don't think that a game has ever done "user-defined" lanes.

I believe Sword of the Stars had "user-defined lanes" as the travel method for one of the factions, who had to send a sort of "hyperspace drill" to another system before their regular ships could follow.

SotS has a different method of FTL for each faction. Zuul use node drills to craft their own nodelines. Humans use the natural ones (fixed grid).

Lava = wet. I like that :)

There could be devilish demons on that kind of planet. Don't say no. In EL there have been demons.

Ahhhhh... SotS. An amazing franchise with so much potential ruined by corporate greed.

Still, it was one of the most complex space strategy out there and the races and lore behind them were simply amazing. The Liir and Morrigi are hands down the best fictional races ever created.

This is why a lot of fans have had a negative reaction to SEGA acquiring Amplitude, due to the bad reputation they made for themselves with some of their other titles. Still not as bad as EA or Ubisoft, but bad enough to scare some people.
