While I'm really liking all the entries so far, especially Uriak's, I do think they could stand to be more imaginative with the colors. Sure, brown and green are the most common colors for plants — here on Earth, in some places, during certain seasons. Without even having to leave our Terran biases behind, we could easily have autumnal trees with red leaves and white or black bark, or wintery trees that appear to be made of pure crystal, or even cherry blossoms. And if we want to get even weirder and more alien, more bizarre colors like blue or purple wouldn't be out of the question.

Hello

Well to be honest I kinda think a basic color scheme should stick to 3 colors most of the time. I went for purple trunc parts, but maybe the armored area could use some other colors ? At the same time, while I fully understand the feeling about avoiding the "tree" tropes, from a graphical viewpoint, the Unfallen will stand apart, when you consider than most factions seem to arbor some scifi armor of some sort. They could be animated cyborg, but well we have both actual cyborgs, and maybe animated armor things, the Doviani,  Sophon are completely covered in their futuristic suits etc.

Though I'm still considering adding more to the civilian. TBH their general philosophy is a bit vague for me, are they genuine do gooder or very manipulative aliens or simply don't give the least consideration to the other sapients though processes ? It's interesting to devise and part 3 should give us plenty of opportunity to explore those questions.

I've got confirmation that there weapon models for all factions so I'm gonna add some Unfallen heavy dakka on those ships.

PS : Oh and another variant of the large spacehisp, I think I'm gonna try to complete this one.

While I am far from an expert on anything drawing-related, I would agree that more than three colors will make them look like the circus just came to town. No, what I was suggesting was to replace some of the already existing colors for more interesting ones i.e. switching all the green for white, red, pink or even blue. That would certainly help to give them a more alien, less ent-y look.

"how tree can be competitive to any sort of metal or pure energy?". If it can't (and it can't), then 'tree flesh'

depends if like most of the races the unfallen were affected by dust then it is possible that there "bark" is somekind of "dense organic nano armour".

we need more information in order the confirm or deny one or both theories but currently just having art of both kind would be usefull.

I think, now we can decide on our own. Limit for text description was one of main rules for Phase 1, so if some facts aren't there, they aren't important.

For me, these trees shouldn't be bulletproof because don't intend to fight at all, they explode with psychotropic clouds instead.

DevildogFF written that they are able to fight, but only to defend themselves or reconquest lost systems. That's how I understood their description.

So I caught a cold so I have been rather sore around the head region today but I managed to bring the warfare Unfallen to a standard im happy with; there might be a few small details here and there but this is it.

Here we go:

Ill be sending off my submission tomorrow after scanning everything in and editing it into the correct format.

Edit: there is a second leg but only a sliver is visable, if I choose to I could have had more "legs", but two legs will be fine. I will probably not be drawing for the next couple of days since I have to work on a literay review on High Lift devices, it has a little more priority.

Because the same reason, their spaceships could be spherical and so not effective in maneuvering. Then, what if Unfallen actually aren't trees but look like trees because of some sort of body modification? And older Unfallen has more 'layers' of these modifications (onion)?

I am a little bit late to comment on this but I have to be a little bit nitpicking here.  Spherical ships would be very maneuverable if you put trusters on all sides equally. Then there would be no need for turns and you don't need arodynamics in space. This is described in the Perry Rhodan books, they use sperical starships. Didn't read them myself, my father told me about that fact, he was into Perry Rhodan.

But I see what your point is: You want to open up the imagination of the Unfallen. More than just plain ents/trees in space. So thinking outside the box I guess?

That said with all the space ships. Isn't it kinda weird that they are also giant trees?

That's like humans exploring the universe inside of giant humans.... who are also just giant cyborg mutants rather then anything less disgusting...

So to whole armoured tree ships still look weird to me. As for the armoured tree people, it's all good gravy, even if it'll all end up as ent people or trees with vine tentacles because trees don't have actual arms and fingers like us apes do.

I think there is no difference between ship forms to affect maneuvering: 1) there is no friction force to consider ship streamlining; 2) energy should be spent to slow down before turning ship in opposite direction. But round object look like more clumsy, at least

If I understood the backstory correctly, their ships are actually Unfallen e.g. living organisms which belong to the same species as the crew.

I wouldn't mind it so much if there is at least Pirates inhabiting the Pancreas.

And colonists inhabiting the colon?

I have been enjoying the creativity of the recent entries, as they are straying from the typical Treefolk look.  But I'm gonna have to go back to Hinin's entry which gives a logical reason for the humanoid shape, as well as look more "diplomatic pacifist" than most others.  And people complaining about the color palette, well I'd say his ideas are pretty colorful compared to the average Ent style.  I can imagine all these giant tree ships suddenly uprooting from the ground and floating into the sky to form a defensive armada.

Was playing Stardrive 2 for the first time in a long time and was reminded of these guys:

Might be good inspiration. They definitely don't look human at all.

Personally love that they play music and are peaceful.

Haha what a cutie :)  I had considered doing a full illustration at first but it's not really what's asked.  I'm still struggling a bit to really imagine their behaviour. But they could be nice enough, while still quite alien and intimidating.

I've been wondering if I should detail those ships (texture wise at least) quite a bit more. I'm gonna include more visible hardpoints at the very least. Do you think some closeup on stuff like engines would be beyond the scope of the challenge format ?

You can put them here if you so wish, but what will go in the contest will be the "collage" image itself.

It is done, my submission was scanned, edited and sent off to Amplitude.

I'm not going to post it here since it will be a nice surprise for when the voting starts, besides you have already seen the 5 images I'm using for it.

In summary my Unfallen:

  • Have 5 glowing eyes arranged closely resembling an arch shape or a sprouting seed
  • Do not normally posses a mouth since the idea of a mouth is to intake fuel, but since I like the idea of "photosythesis", mouths are unnecessary
  • Are a combination of living wood, manes/clothes of "leaves" and inorganic materials like stones, gems, metals and structures
  • Can grow not only into spaceships and "giant walking buildings" but can also form "conventional vehicles" suited to their role in society
  • Are not limited to 2 arms and 2 legs but can have multiple limbs and appendages or a lack thereof, they grow how they pleases
  • Appendages can suit different purposes and act as multi-tools or as specific tools, like a kickass biogun or a simple tentacle poker
  • Ships are powered by solar sails, like giant flying sycamore seeds, rather than conventional propulsion engines

Or at least this much I remember right now.

In terms of communication, I have not decided on how it should be through gestures or through musical chimes or something else like an etheral voice projected from an Unfallen or simple telepathy. I'm not sure which is the best fitting.

So  for now. Hope everyone is enjoying their day because after this, I'm feeling a whole lot better... even if I am still in the aftershock of a cold. Belugh.
