Why endless space ships have set sizes ?

Something that scratched my curiosity why ES ships have set sizes ? 100 meters - 300 meters - 1 km ? wouldn't ships from different factions have different sizes ? there is any lore reason for this ? maybe is just a game mechanic ? also i always thought that ES ships would be a bit bigger well they always gave me that image.

Also do we know how many crew takes to man ships ? does boarding happens in lore ? does the cravers board enemy ships in ship to ship actions ?  are we getting it in game ? since the new faction intro showed a cinnematic with what appeared to be a boarding action i assume that yes but anyway those are my questions.

If you read the tooltips under the techs in ES1 it seems that the main constraint in building giant ships is power requirements. I suppose the logic is that all of these races have low power technologies in the beginning and are able to build slightly larger ships because they are basically researching the same techs.

The sophons build what appears to be a dyson sphere ( eh almost) power requeriments shouldnt be an issue :P maybe big ships are impractical thats the best i can think off but big ships means more redundancy systems which translates in more durability and more survivability for the crew.

To be fair they would also have to extract the resources used in giant ships and then manufacture them, there are probably loads more engineering problems and I suppose all of the ships have to be able to manuever in orbit around any kind of planet.

Well the thing is that apparently one race can build planet sized structures this alone handwaves the resource collection and power requirement problems they should be able to build 50km long ships if they want to, if they can get enough building materials to put a ring around a star and then made what appears to be a gas giant sized structure on top of it then building multy kilometer ships should be a child play thats some level 2 civ stuff we are talking about here.

Sophons are crazy advanced.

They are also probably a lot like Leonard of Quirm from Discworld: Too focused on science to even realize their inventions can be used for war.

I happen to be very happy about these ships sizes since now I have a definitive measurment for a Mass Effect crossover. As for the Sophons building a Dyson sphere, they haven't. Not technically at least. BAsed on the trailer they've used some kind of ringworld to project an energy field or warp space so that the energy radiating off their star is absorbed and wirelessly transmitted. But eh, I'm just nitpicking. Of course such a feat does make them a Kardeshev type 2 civilization, which is frankly terrifying.

It could simply be a design issue.

For example, imagine how it'd look if you had a really huge-ass ship that you scale weapon sizes with. If assuming the projectiles and weapons scale appropriately, it might be weird during combat, say when they're hitting a smaller ship.

You'll end up with a really large projectile hitting a really small target (which in itself isn't a bad thing, but it might be a matter of aesthetic or design to the devs).

Ships of comparable power should have a comparable size. Each class being 3 times bigger than the one before (small> medium> large) helps indicate who's the big hitter in the battle arena.

Final, paramount consideration: our battle plays depend on ships being a certain size so they don't bump into each other (or clip or shimmy along or what have you), and our battle cameras also need the ships to fit within certain size requirements, lest for every ship model on every spline at every position you would have to redo all cameras.

Do let us know more if you get around to writing it, I'd love to read that.
