Success, but still community call to action: [MOD] anime replacements (endless Waifus)

Hello,

I'd like to make a weeb undertaking of making a mod which basically replaces all characters with anime characters.

This not an overly original idea, yet has never been actually thorougly done before :-( .

It has already been shown how easy it is to replace hero assets, however I'd like to:

  1. Reach out to fellow modders on whether it is even possible to replace faction screen/faction leader assets.
    (check, it apparently is, we good on this front)
    Ok, turns out I was mislead to believe it is, it is not, this part is unatainable with assets outside the game.
    Two weeks later using proper keywords to research yet another 3 asset linking paths I finally got it.
  2. Reach out to community to provide suggestions on assets themselves as to individual anime universes to replace each faction.
    Example:
    Replacing various Horatios with various incarnations of JoJo, and hopefully the theme too.
    Using a sum of gundam/nge mechs to replace riftborn, or instead use MLP characters...
    Take a faction, list heroes, link imgur pics, make suggestions based of your favourite anime and try to achieve a reasonable fit with the original faction.

If you want to participate in providing assets for suitable replacements, you can also go above and beyond by using Cali's utility tool for designing custom heroes

Current conception is that we'll make mods faciton by faction to be used at once or separately at will, although that will probably not work, so we just gonna make one big mod instead.

Here's how to participate:

  1. Provide ideas
  2. Provide assets and content - as in the properly sized pictures on agreed/potential versions of your chosen anime/faction little of it will go to waste as we can simply flood the game with extra heroes if need be
  3. Playtest the mod once available
Proof of concept: Horatio Quintiplets.
- replaces faction selection screen background, diplomacy background, loading screen and individual horatio specific heroes with Quintesential Quintiplets anime characters.
- fails to replace leader and population icons (sorry, not possible with outside the game assets as far as everyone I asked knows)
github link for all the files - feel free to utilize for other factions, if you wish to do so, or give your own take on horatio. You can also easily source the files simply by subscribing to the mod and find it under ..\steam\steamapps\workshop\content

The Quintessential Quintuplets for horatio? Can't find more than 4 horatio heroes in the game files =D so 5 should be fine.

regarding hero types, primitives are the most numerous.

  1. Venetians: 5
  2. Vaulters: 4
  3. Vampirilis: 4
  4. Unfallen: 4
  5. UmbralChoir: 5
  6. TimeLords: 4
  7. Terrans: 8
  8. Templars: 5
  9. Sophons: 5
  10. Primitives: 11
  11. Pirates: 9
  12. Insectoids: 6
  13. Horatio: 5
  14. Hisshos: 4
  15. Endless: 2
  16. Cravers: 5
  17. Advanced: 9
You're honestly looking at a huge amount of work, will help if I can(not at all a UI or graphics guy)

It's not that hard, all we really need is an idea for a particular faction and then 3 pictures for each hero, probably one splash for faction as a whole or leader.
Thanks for the count though! ^_^
Assignments would be really simple, take a faction and reimagine it in waifus from a specific anime.

Then following Cali's hero creator provide assets for each hero.
Neutral hero sources can be then just replaced with random stuff, like JoJo, pokemon, gundam, EVAs, Angels... you name it. But bonus points if we really manage to make it all waifus.

From my understanding there would be name replacements afterwards, to make sure all heroes are actually replaced, because the way it's build the generator generates an additional hero afair.

This is correct, after we have the assets, we would do the actaual replacement of each hero, including bio and such.
But creating a use-ready package for individual heroes with properly tested and sized pics will help a long way in doing so ^_^.

Looking really nice

Suggestions:
I also think Tanya would be good for one of the factions

Other anime groups that I've been brainstorming:
not really sure how real / fantasy you wanted to make it
Neptunia, Konosuba, Black Lagoon, pumpkin scissors?

Maybe some games like Girls frontline could be added?

Im not sure if custom major factions are a thing, or how to do it (I think its possible) but that would be cool to add in the future

I dont think the 3d portraits of heros can be modded so youre stuck with static images like my hero designer

Other things to note:
My ES2 Hero tool is not perfect, there are some bugs and weird things when it comes to the hero skill trees (mainly skills starting at level 0, or icons/colours in general)
I have "kindof" started a rework/overhall of that tool, but due to lack of time it has been put on hold and has been for nearly a year now
basically, if you are creating custom skill trees you need to take extra care in testing, nothing too major.

I'm more annoyed by not being able to provide more than three skilltrees :D

can take care of fixing the skilltrees and skills by hand, have done that before and it's not that much of an issue. (I like your tool btw)

I would not worry about skill trees, the primary goal is to make a purely cosmetic change, not an actual functional change.

We should be able to get that going simply by relinking assets, with proper assets provided via the tool.
We can then dump a bonus pack of random heroes into it if we actually go above and beyond our original goals, but for now I would focus to go faction by faction with suitable replacements.

What's good for unfallen? Please drop in actual pics and examples. As I have not seen majority of your picks, while you probably have not seen majority of my picks.

I might goober around with the custom creator tool and report back, but is there a particular preference on transparent backgrounds for the character art?


Also, looking at it a bit, it would be pretty difficult to make every faction 100% waifu if you intend to have each faction homogenous to a singular series, and also retain some sense of similarity to the base factions. There's a few shows with all-female casts that would totally work (Girls Und Panzer for the United Empire is basically a given), but it would open up a lot of fun series if the only criteria was to try and match themes. Cravers could use the Overlord cast, for example.

That's actually a pretty neat fit I like it. I mean if we don't make it to 100% waifu, it won't be an "endless waifu mod" but we can figure out the name later =D

I think at the very least the minor factions are so mixed already, that it wouldn't make sense to try and give them a single theme.


Konosuba would fit into pirates quite well with their rather chaotic group imho.

And purely by numbers, what about Insectoids (or focussing on the main two Endless) from How not to summon a demon lord?

Thank you! I ended up writing down a bunch of ideas off the bat, and I got several of the major factions, some with multiple options:


Horatio - Quintuplets (your suggestion got a chuckle out of me)

Riftborn - Frame Arms Girl/Azur Lane

United Empire - Girls Und Panzer (again, this one is a no-brainer)

Cravers - Overlord

Hissho - Katana Maidens/Sword Art Online/Katsugeki Touken Ranbu (FULL glorifying of swordstuff for these guys, on a scale of waifu to husbando. Multiple mod options may be required.)

Unfallen - Somali and the Forest Spirit? That's the closest I could get after wracking my brain thinking of a sufficiently tree-focused theme.

Sophons - I wrote down Steins;Gate, but I don't actually remember if the cast is big enough.

Umbral Choir - Hyperdimension Neptunia

Vodyani - Seraph of the End (or any other sufficiently vampire-themed anime)

Vaulters - Symphogear was my choice for the waifu option, but you could double down on the vikings and go with Vinland Saga too.

Lumeris - Princess Principal/Cowboy Bebop/Bungou Stray Dogs (again, forming a scale of waifu to husbando, though Bungou does have some good waifu characters too)

Nakalim - I put very little effort into thinking about this one, and the first name to pop into my head was Evangelion.

Yep, minor factions and miscellaneous heroes would definitely be a mixed bag. Konosuba as pirates would be amusing, but for the Virtual Endless hero, specifically, I thought it would be very terrible amusing to use Amadeus.


Additionally, the Amoeba hero would clearly be Rimuru, of course in his slime form.

I think mononoke might not have trees but enough forest related stuff for the unfallen
Seven sins from FMA might also find their place.

I haven't seen Mononoke, but that's a good idea, if there's a wide enough cast to get all the heroes.


The FMA sins could totally work as the Vodyani, being the "evil" faction.

Ok, so as for my next trick, I shall try and deliver a "proof of concept" by making horatio into quintiplets, 

hopefully in the near future, when I feel like it and all, should have probably done it during the weekend but then I had things to play,


meanwhile we can iron out suggestions, spread awareness, get more input, learn to mod....
To extract from CallyyllaC's guide here's what picture sizes you need per hero:

Large:

Format: PNG

Width: 360px

Height: 180px

Meduim:

Format: PNG

Width: 180px

Height: 240px

Mood:

Format: PNG

Width: 1324px

Height: 712px

So I started with Yotsuba,

first you want a base picture, that can be them resized to fit the individual picturesso I find a high resolution pic at https://images2.alphacoders.com/989/989163.png 

I then resized it down to individual requirements 

and there you have it. Yotsuba is ready to be used as graphical element replacement.

Each hero takes about 3 minutes simply using MS paint and figuring out the quirks.

On top of individual hero assets I'll also need to following, size underfined AFAIK but we can always size down

            <Icon Size="Loading" Path="Gui/LoadingScreen06" />   <- loading screen obv 



So far I am struggling as part of the icons is not loading/replacing original assets properly, so I departed to seek wisdom and guidance from the modding gurus and will carry on once I have climbed the mountain of discovery.

What about opening up a repository on github(or a similar service) and letting us do provide our additions via merge requests?

I second this, that would make things quite easy.


Also, I've just had the thought of the Parasyte aliens in place of the UC. Not even the slightest bit waifu, but it does make sense.
