I know the custom Faction isn't available yet however I believe it will be alot like EL and ES. So the features I would love to see for customized factions are:

-Affinities and Graphics: Unlike EL were the affinity dictates how your faction looks it should definitely be more like ES where you can interchange graphics and affinities.

-Affinities Editor: I really think being able to make our own affinities would be awesome! Like with the faction editing there are a certain number of points that one can use to alter an affinity.

-Custom Ship Graphics: interchangeable fleet skins or maybe on a deeper level customizing fleet skins. Eg. you like the nose of one ship and the body of another with this color ect.

-Custom Races Graphics: Maybe you want the United Empire of Cravers. Interchangable skins for races.

I agree, this would permit players to be more imaginative on the faction they would like to play.

That would certainly add originality later on the game, and probably boost is longevity of the game, as player could "rewrite" the factions available.
