One of my very favorite things in 4x games is the ability to customize starships and then see how my designs fair against either the AI or other players. 


As ES2 already has the idea of ship sections, I would love to see a mix and match system that would allow me to piece together my ships. 


Want a faster ship? Add ship sections that have more support slots. Or sections that have less mass/weight (some of which would cost strategic resources as they are made of more exotic alloys that improve some aspect like health, kinetic or energy absorption, etc).


Want more weapons? Trade out the section for one with either more weapon mounts, or with weapon mounts the size and style you're looking for. 


Want more slots? This compromises the integrity of the hull, but obviously gives you more options.


By allowing us to trade out shipsections, the variations in hulls increases exponentially.

Would these be physical changes?

If they were it'd be far too late in development to even consider

not really. what should be done is make a dlc that covers all the races that allow you to change the ships or build them from the ground up that would be great.

While ideally there would be physical/image/animation updates, a lot of what I'm suggesting can be done without any, which the exception of a UI to alter the values and variables previously mentioned.
