I don't feel many differences beetween ships of one faction, and don't feel differences too beetween ships of differents factions.
There is just same modules, same weapons, defense and supports module everywhere.
One ship or another, there is no true impact on the game, it's just a question of improvement and upgrade modules.
For now, my fleets are just : I choose the best ship i unlocked, and make the design, then mass produce it. That all !
SO...
Each ship should be unique. It mean to add more modules categories, et put more restrictions about what module to use.
Also, any ships should get some specials modules reserved to them, for making the game really interesting about making a fleet composition. Goal is to use differents Ships than interacts each others.
Example, a defensive ship can get a module "get +40% damage when orbiting on your system". No other ship can get this module, except maybe one or two other defensive ship among all ships of the game.
Another example : a ship can't access to projectile weapons and can use only lazers/beam.
Another example : a support ship get a module "add +10% defense to other ships of the fleet". Only defensives ships can access to that.
Another example : a coordinator ship get a module "all ships of the fleet get +1 movement".
New Module Categories system.
Extend the module categories. So any slot on a ship can get more restricted access. It's very notable with the "support" module because this module can be used for too much things.
The SLOT on the ship can indicate :
- Free slot for anything
- Slot for a general categorie (attack, defense, support)
- Slot for a specific categorie.
- Slot for a specific module ! but should be dual choice instead (choosing one module among two).
List of specifics categories
Attack
- Energy weapons
- Projectile weapons
Defense
- Energy defense
- Projectile defense
Support
- Global (provide anything for helping attack or defense of a system, like manpower bonus, general bonus to the fleet).
- Exploration (Probes, vision, Movement)
- Infrastructure (general bonus to the ship, example damage bonus, HP regen, etc..)
Specifics Class or Models Modules
SHIP CLASS MODULES : here the most important. Each ship get a class (hunter, coordinator, etc...) and each class get specials modules only accessible by this class.
The modules are added in the standard modules categories list.
SHIP CLASS REMOVED MODULES : Some standards module could be missing for a ship class.
SHIP MODEL MODULE : Some modules can be only be accessible by some specifics ships.
SHIP MODEL REMOVED MODULES : Adding to that, any ship could be restricted for any specific module. Example : a small exploration ship can't access to projectiles weapons with high range.
Here there is enough possibilitys for making each ship unique, and each faction unique also, about ship design.
