I get that the developers want to encourage the player to think strategically by forcing you to make difficult choices, but personally I think this is overkill. If I could choose to research both titanium and hyperium weapons, sure I'm getting a tactical advantage over my opponents who might not have researched the appropriate defence in time, but then I'm slowing down my research in other potentially crucial areas by over-committing to the military branch of the skill tree. It's a risk vs. reward scenario that adds to the strategy of the game.
My main concern is how it affects the enhanced ship hulls. Again; researching one tech locks you out of the other, so you can only research the enhanced hulls for ONE of the two small ships, and ONE of the two medium ships from each faction. This is a real shame, because it discourages you from using two of the five ship hulls available to you. Sure, you can use the basic hulls, but they become totally out-classed by the enhanced hulls. It seems a waste to design such awesome looking ships, then impose limits on how you upgrade them that make some of them undesirable to use.
Personally, I love having a huge fleet of cool and diverse looking ships by the end of the game. Please remove the exclusive techs Amplitude. They make no sense within the context of the game world, and they diminish the fun of the game for many of us. I have faith that you can come up with a better system to pacing the tech tree progression. Thanks you.
