Next Expansion: Hero Origin

Reply

With another expansion for Endless Space 2 in the works, we once again want to involve our passionate community in the design process. Over the coming weeks, you will get to vote on several aspects of the lore in the new DLC, starting today with a vote on one of the new faction’s heroes.

At the peak of their power, the new faction controlled a vast galactic empire and had absorbed many other cultures and species into their own. Although their former glory has dimmed and their power waned, the legacy of this cosmopolitan society remains. As anybody can rise to power, regardless of their background, one of their new heroes will hail from an existing Minor Faction. Which one is up to you!

Kal'Tik'Ma
The story of the Kal'Tik'Ma's ascendance is not a happy one. Generations ago, at the birth of their space-age, several vast starships set sail for other worlds. It was a time of great optimism, the travails of the past overcome, and the future bright. After long voyages the starships landed on diverse worlds, the Kal'Tik'Ma keen to learn all they could and see all the wonders the galaxy could offer. They could always return home if they found the planets too hostile. Except suddenly they couldn't, their home star going nova and obliterating their homeworld. Out in the galaxy, only one colonization project survived and founded a rudimentary civilization. Placating the native dinosaurs on a sand swept planet, the Kal'Tik'Ma are now a race of scavengers, forever dreaming of a lost homeworld.

Kalgeros
The Kalgeros evolved from a marsupial-like species, and their relatively small size is countered by their surprising strength and agility. As they moved from protecting or conquering a tree to a tribe to a village, the society realized that its somewhat belligerent tendencies had to be channeled. Over time they developed a martial art that they call "Mardamari", unique in the galaxy for the number of limbs required to execute it. They are led by "gunga", spiritual and martial leaders who have the responsibility for moral and physical education. Jolly and gregarious in daily life, they are deadly serious in questions of combat and honor.

Remnant
Originally an ancient order of assassins created when the Endless ruled the galaxy, after their masters' demise the Remnant underwent a period of hibernation for millennia in the crypts of a forgotten moon. Numbering only a few hundred upon awakening, the Remnant would've spent the rest of eternity awaiting orders were it not for the actions of Belcus Akad-Talar, a highly-decorated member of the order who'd become Dust-augmented during its slumber. Connecting the digital minds of its fellow assassins through quantum entanglement, Belcus suppressed their inherent programming, and gave them a new purpose: to build a better galaxy for the most deserving race they encountered.

Ah yes Drakken would be cool. Actully they were the first to cross my mind when I read the post. Space dinos are cool, so how about space dragons :D? It would be interesting to see their story past Auriga where they ultimately saw themsleves as servants of the Endless. We still don't exactly know how many civilizations survived the cataclysm aside from Vaulters.

Actually when you think about it, the race is a pretty damn good candidate for the DLC. An ancient declining race, cus they probably wouldn't have both Wyverns and Ancients anymore, only their drakkenling forms.  Their EL storyline had a dynamic about questioning the will of Endless (yeah we now how this ended in EL). "Declining" was kinda their theme to begin with. Maybe the decline mechanic will have something to do with the initial high population dying out the longer your playing and the need to absorb minor civs to survive. As an "all about Diplomacy" race it fits perfectly with the "absorbed many other cultures" thing. That would also be a great opportunity to tweak the Diplomacy system. And just imagine their ships: encased in gold fleets full of ornaments. Or, mechanized dragons :D

Voted Kalgeros; I wanted to give a challenge to artists to make a cool looking Kalgeros (:

I think they look pretty cool, given what their background is.

I had to go with Kal'Tik'Ma, although I considered Remnant strongly.

In the original blog it states

This faction will be a complete departure for Amplitude and the 4X genre. Rather than leading a vigorous young civilization reaching out toward the stars, the player will be fighting to restore an ancient, declining faction; this people is dreaming of their past glory and striving to recapture it.

As such the best that fits this description for me is by far the Kal'Tik'ma

I had to go for Kal'Tik'ma because it contains much potential for an awesome religious faction.

Out of the 6 political affinities, I felt the religious affinity to be the most creative of them all. Unfortunately, it was also the most complicating, so there is some 'religious=vodyani' bias in me. I hope Kal'Tik'ma can break that.

Gotta go with Kal'Tik'Ma. The history fits nicely into the game, and is flexible with a variety of different races. But again, I liked the background read on them (the best)!

The robo assassin was a close 2nd for me, but it's starting to feel overrated/overplayed (the whole AI thing in general). Same with Kungfu panda alien guy.

Anyhow, they're all valid ideas! I love this game and company! Keep doing what you do, and don't sell out - please!

Choose very difficult, I loved both Kal'Tik'Ma and Remnant but I ended up with Kal'Tik'Ma because I believe the lore will be much more interesting.
