Next Expansion: Hero Origin

Reply

With another expansion for Endless Space 2 in the works, we once again want to involve our passionate community in the design process. Over the coming weeks, you will get to vote on several aspects of the lore in the new DLC, starting today with a vote on one of the new faction’s heroes.

At the peak of their power, the new faction controlled a vast galactic empire and had absorbed many other cultures and species into their own. Although their former glory has dimmed and their power waned, the legacy of this cosmopolitan society remains. As anybody can rise to power, regardless of their background, one of their new heroes will hail from an existing Minor Faction. Which one is up to you!

Kal'Tik'Ma
The story of the Kal'Tik'Ma's ascendance is not a happy one. Generations ago, at the birth of their space-age, several vast starships set sail for other worlds. It was a time of great optimism, the travails of the past overcome, and the future bright. After long voyages the starships landed on diverse worlds, the Kal'Tik'Ma keen to learn all they could and see all the wonders the galaxy could offer. They could always return home if they found the planets too hostile. Except suddenly they couldn't, their home star going nova and obliterating their homeworld. Out in the galaxy, only one colonization project survived and founded a rudimentary civilization. Placating the native dinosaurs on a sand swept planet, the Kal'Tik'Ma are now a race of scavengers, forever dreaming of a lost homeworld.

Kalgeros
The Kalgeros evolved from a marsupial-like species, and their relatively small size is countered by their surprising strength and agility. As they moved from protecting or conquering a tree to a tribe to a village, the society realized that its somewhat belligerent tendencies had to be channeled. Over time they developed a martial art that they call "Mardamari", unique in the galaxy for the number of limbs required to execute it. They are led by "gunga", spiritual and martial leaders who have the responsibility for moral and physical education. Jolly and gregarious in daily life, they are deadly serious in questions of combat and honor.

Remnant
Originally an ancient order of assassins created when the Endless ruled the galaxy, after their masters' demise the Remnant underwent a period of hibernation for millennia in the crypts of a forgotten moon. Numbering only a few hundred upon awakening, the Remnant would've spent the rest of eternity awaiting orders were it not for the actions of Belcus Akad-Talar, a highly-decorated member of the order who'd become Dust-augmented during its slumber. Connecting the digital minds of its fellow assassins through quantum entanglement, Belcus suppressed their inherent programming, and gave them a new purpose: to build a better galaxy for the most deserving race they encountered.

Would be nice if the Kal'Tik'Ma  won this one instead of the Remnant. We Just got a expansion with a ghost faction. I would like the next race to at least have organic bodies this time. A desert world also reminds me of Homeworld. That game is one of the best sci fi strategy games.  Change your votes for Kal'Tik'Ma, in honor of Kharak.

*sigh* I don't even understand why they put Remnant as a contender when the faction already has a number of side quests involving it and has a fleshed out lore. It's just not as interesting compared to factions that have a huge amount of potential for lore and so little actual content related to it. This just feels poorly done, like there are multiple factions that should've had a shot that aren't as fleshed out (i.e Sowers, Kalmat, Galvran, Sefaloros, Amblyr, etc) that were instead replaced by two factions (Remnant, Kalgeros) who already have a pretty solid presence in the canon.

Yea, some factions lack heroes or quests. I guess the reasoning can be like "Remnant werent serving Endless but this faction X" and/or "Remnant are cyborg members of race X" and Im not salty that Remnant won (as they are equally interesting ) but a poster above me has right - why only those in particular were given a shot?

oooo doggies, close race.

Glad about the Remnant, unfortunate for the Kal'Tik'Ma however, good opportunity to get more stuff for them though in the future.

They should take this close neck & neck as a sign that it's a good idea to do both :D

well, I can deal with it. Kal' tik'mas had by far a more awesome art imo, but as I suspect this will be the only implication, I won't complain again.

I'm still confused. Does this vote determine the minor faction that may be elevated to the major faction?

Nope, rather it's which minor faction will have a hero within the new faction. That minor faction will also likely be apart of the new major faction in some way/shape/form.

YES!  You did it, Remnant!  Hooray!

(My condolences to the Kil'Tik'Ma supporters; they're a very cool race)

Another close vote.  I forgot to vote but nevertheless wanted Remnant to win cuz I can't for the life of me spell the other one correctly.  Also Remnant kinda remind me of Keepers from Mass Effect 2, making them a little mysterious.

Hey everyone,

We understand that many of you would have liked to see other minor factions in this vote, like the Sowers or Amoeba, as they are old favorites from Endless Space 1 to many of you. However, we had to abide by certain constraints in our selection for this vote, the strongest of which was that we wanted a humanoid faction so we could clearly represent the hero’s allegiance to the new faction without major changes in the visual design of either the minor or major faction just for this hero. Within those limits, we picked the three factions we felt would be the best fit for a hero in the new major faction.

Having said that, we hope you will find the new hero compelling even if they don't hail from your favorite faction.

Hey Cat,

Thanks for the response and clarification. That makes a lot of sense and even though it is frustrating to see minor factions that aren't as represented in the current canon/game I (and likely everyone else who wished for other minor factions to be present) still look forward to the next great piece of DLC that you guys release!
