New planet - why is it when I put an exploitation in the top of the queue that say, adds food, I don't see any change in the level of food being produced?

Ditto dust, energy, etc?

What's the trick with exploitations?

do you mean, after the exploitation has been built or just when you put it in the queue? Improvements work once built.

Confused here. Exploitations are a 'continuous' thing... when you look at 'number of turns' it says 'infinite'.

So I thought they were different from say (I'll use Civ terms here) 'building a Windmill in 8 turns'. So if it takes forever to build them and there's no effect till they're built.... ?

No, mate. There are exploitations (specializations) for each planet in the system, it can gain you more of one of the FIDS resources (food, industry, dust, science) and ALSO there are conversions 'Industry -> Science' and 'Industry -> Dust' for the whole system. Exploitations are built on each planet and can be changed whenever you want (you can 'build' food exploitations first and then switch it to dust exploitation once you have full population on each planet) but conversions work like you say, they're infinite. So, you'll see the exploitation's effect after building one of them but conversion should work immediately, i.e. after choosing to convert industry to dust you should see the increase of dust income of every planet.

To see the available exploitations you must first click on any planet in your system, there will be 4 available to you.

Also, you can upgrade available explotations via the Tech Tree, there are at least two more tiers for each exploitation, IIRC. Also, some faction have more conversion options than two.

Incidentally, the AI actually does that, it switches back and forth between food and other exploitations depending on the pop level (which is good, and it should). exploitation switching is really cheap

Also, incidentally, like you said there is no food conversion. only

industry -> dust

industry -> science
