Does that mean I HAVE THE RESOURCE?

Or does that mean if I build something or research something then I will HAVE THE RESOURCE?

I'm thinking if I have done the research and have colonized the planet the has the resource, then I have it. And I get whatever benefits it has.

Are these benefits planet wide, system wide or Empire wide?

From the trade screen it says 'I have access to this resource' but I can't move it to the 'left side of the deal' portion of the screen.

You're right that when you have access to the resource, you own it. But you own less than a monopoly on the resource. You'll gain benefits per item and when you gain enough of them for a monopoly, you'll gain the extra benefits.

You can't trade the resource until you research the trade tech. It's on the left tech branch and is called "Alien Security". It's a subset of the "Relativistic Markets" tech.

Planetary resources are first planet benefits. They also can give empire benefits when you accumulate a certain number of them. For example "you have this resource in abundance" or "you have a monopoly". This depends on the resource type and the faction. For example for Harmony you can get "abundance" with 3 of them.

It means you have the resource. if you didn't have the tech then it would not show up in empire screen and looking at the planet in system view, the resource would be greyed out.

Every resource gives its bonus to the planet on which it is found (morale is added up between all planets for the system morale)

Every resource has a monopoly bonus that happens if you have 4+ copies of t, this one is empire wide.

Strategic resources give the cost discount to entire empire

Strategic resource +ind/sci bonus is only to planet on which they are found.

I sure wish this game had a real manual.

I notice the luxury resource icons over the planets..... they're white. And the strategic ones are purple.

That doesn't mean anything, right? It's not like white means you don't have the resource?

The purple strategic resources are what you need to build certain things once you've researched the tech for that item. Advanced weaponry and the like. You need one of each of these, but it's nice to get spares.

The white luxury resources are what you're really after. They'll give you bonuses in fids, approval, attack/defense/invasion, etc. You get huge bonuses when you have a monopoly of these. Keep in mind that a monopoly doesn't mean you've cornered the market. Several factions can have monopolies on the same resource.

White means its a luxury resource, purple means its a strategic resource.

Grey only appears in the system view when you zoom in. For a luxury resource that you are missing the tech for (and as such you don't receive its benefits)

They only way you can see the (strategic) resources before you have access to them (meaning see them above planets before you researched the tech to see them) is if you have the Mineral Memory trait (from Harmony faction). Otherwise it's like everyone else is saying.
