If I had two fleets in the same system I used to be able to drag ships from one fleet into another.

You kind of NEED TO DO THIS otherwise your little fleet gets chosen to fight the other guys BIG FLEET and you get your ass handed to you.

So why isn't this working anymore? Is there some total for how much tonnage a fleet can have?

I'm getting clobbered here, any advice?

Also, battles sure are funny. My fleet with a value of 1200 will fight some fleet with a value of 600 and we'll both loose 2 ships (when the ships are about the same size).

It's hard for me to win battles in this game. And if I don't get my fleets TOGETHER....

PS: I've tried the MERGE from the Fleets button, doesn't work there either, even when fleets are in the same system.

HELP!!!!!!

Have you looked at the amount of command points you have one the fleets you try to merge?

I know that once you have too many you have to drag the ships individually to the fleets you want to put them with.

I think you usually start with around 12 command points and some ships take 1 point , some 2 and so on. bigger ships = more points.

There are also ways to get more command points through research.

see diplomacy tree.

*edit*

looking at the comment below,

yeah I think I've been playing an easier difficulty level,

and while I own disharmony I'm not sure if I play it?

maybe, maybe not.

In my games, I start with 5 command points, but it might be different on the lower difficulty levels or in the vanilla game. I only play Disharmony.

Yes, you need to keep an eye on the command points and it's easy to get a few more through the lower level techs on the top and left branches.

As far as you losing 2 ships each in battles, it depends on the number of ships, type of weapons and defenses used, along with any buffs/debuffs from the factions or heros. I tend to take an armor on my ships as soon as possible, so even though my ships look weak, they can handle a lot more abuse before falling. Having weaker looking ships encourages the AI to attack more, so I get more opportunities for combat. Bombers also don't indicate their combat strength, so you might be getting hit with attack style bombers. It's easy to miss if you don't look close.

A thing I do for battles is to send in several fleets at the same time (long range weapons only), with a primary full fleet (let's say it's early in the game, so 5 CP) and some smaller fleets (1CP, 2 CP and 3CP). If the enemy attacks, you can't merge the fleets until the combat is resolved, but any ships that die will be automatically replaced in the defending fleet during the next combat engagement as long as you have enough CPs left.

For instance, you have 4 fleets at the intial engagement. A 5CP, a 3CP, a 2CP and a 1CP. The enemy attacks without giving you a chance to shuffle anything. Your 5CP fleet engages and loses 2 ships so it's now a 3CP fleet. The enemy immediately attacks again without giving you a chance to merge fleets. At the start of combat, your weakened 3CP fleet merges with your 2CP fleet and you're back to fighting with a 5CP fleet. This is only during combat, so it doesn't show up on the fleet icons. You'll still have a 5CP fleet in combat though.

Let's say you lose 3 ships this time. Your fleet has been weakened to 2CP and the enemy attacks immediately again. Your remaining 3CP fleet merges with your weakened 2CP one and you're back to 5CP for the combat round. This would be a good time to wait on the combat and perhaps send a few more small fleets in to take up the slack. If you lose another 2 ships without replenishing, you'll be down to a 4CP fleet if the enemy attacks again.

You can also send in a bunch of 1CP fleets to back up your main 5CP fleet. That way, your fleets can respond better to changing conditions, but it's more expensive in dust. You pay for each CP you own, but also a bit for each active fleet.

Good hunting.

Wait, with this logic

which is amazing anyway,

can the fleets only merge during combat if they have less CP than a whole fleet - or if the sum is that of a full fleet?

say I have two fleets of 5 CP, will the second fleet and three battles... one looses 2 units and the other 1 in two battles,

but in the third they don't merge temporally because their CP is too much? (3 + 4 = 7, not 5)

Or can fleets borrow ships to complete their numbers.

The fleet total has to be within your CP cap or they won't merge during the engagement. So if you have a CP cap of 5 and two 3CP fleets, they won't help each other.

Also, keep in mind that this is only for defense. If you attack with a 3CP fleet, you'll only have 3CP in your fleet. But if the enemy attacks you and you have 5 1CP ships in there before the engagement, your ships will works as a 5CP fleet until the engagement is over.

Also, once the enemy engages, you can't add ships to the engaged fleet. You have to set it up beforehand.
