Can't upgrade a ship - it says 'missing resource in this system'

First, it doesn't tell me what the resource is. ???

Next, I thought resources were system-wide? You mean you have to go to systems that have a certain resource to update your ships?

If a system with this resource is under a siege, you can't use this resouece globally, only on that system. So, check if one of your systems in under a siege.

I'm at peace and none of my systems are under seige.

But how do I know what resource is missing? I can see upgrading ships is a critical part of this game. The AI likes to roll into your systems with a boatload of upgraded ships and just clobber you.

When you designed your upgraded ship, did you include a component which needs a specific resource like Titanium70 just for the sake of example? Can you actually produce the new design on your planets? If you can produce it but not upgrade to it, and you have the dust, it could be a bug.

It is possible that you have an improved component, but don't have the resource to build that part (either science or actual resource missing). When designing the ships, it shows the resources needed to build the ship and if there is a yellow circle with a line through it over that resources that means you don't have that resource to use. The designer will still let you design a ship needing specific resources you don't have, but you won't be able to build or upgrade them until you have access to that resource.

I found out it tells you what you need in the ship design. But not when you're building the ship.

Was missing anti-matter. And here's a problem.... I COULD NOT take the module using the anti-matter off the ship design. The '-' key was grayed out and it said something like 'this is the last module'. ???

could it be, that the ship design you used have the component requiring anti-matter by default?

I know you can't remove the engine from the first three ships - possibly the latter ones as well.

so better ships might have new components by default I mean.

There should be an arrow at the top to go to a previous version of the module. However as Rancor said, if the lowest tier module requires anti matter and you don't have any you can't use it. Just for the sake of clarification though what was this module? Edit: The minus button ( - ) is used to subtract an amount of the module, so it only works on things that can be stacked such as weapons.

It does tell you what resources you are missing when you are building a ship. Blue = available, red = unavailable

As for where you can see which resources you have... Why don't you play the tutorial? it explicitly explains this and most of your other questions
