I wonder exactly what the food resource does?

I presume it has something to do with population growth at planets. But I wonder if the food resource is distributed to other planets in the same system or even to other systems.

What other effect does food have, morale bonuses... or what?

I'm pretty sure people would be very unhappy at the least if not starve without it. The moral boost is the luxury goods.

Food is aggregated on system level and you need surplus to see your population grow. smiley: smile

So you'll basically like to have a system with much surplus food to be able to quickly build colonizers there, without depleting the local populace too much.

It may be a bit unrealistic, since too much food results probably in more girth and that is possibly not helping reproduction, but it is an easy and nice game mechanic.

Ok, so basically food is NOT redistributed to OTHER systems, just to the system the planet is in.

If you maxed out the population in a system there are no particular need for any excessive food production in that system other than to sustain the current population?
