When I jump a fleet into one of my systems, ready to combat the pirate menace currently holding a blockade over my planets...I often (in fact, every time so far) end up being on defence, because the enemy initiates the attack first, on my turn.

Now, I know that's a deliberate feature that must have required some thought, but doesn't it arguably make the "Offence" value of heroes somewhat useless?

For example..if I jump into the system, and just wait, then the pirates will eventually attack my fleet or leave. Thus, if I just stack "Defence" points on my fleet commander, then it will be at maximum effectiveness, at least for this job of clearing out rats.

I'd like to see a tick-box option or similar on fleets, whereby you can order them to attack hostile forces immediately upon an encounter, which would always work if this was during your turn. This would prevent being on the defensive, even though you jumped in with the express intention of attacking first.

It's a defensive battle because it's your system. If you try to attack an enemy system it will always be an offensive battle.

Personally I like it as it lets me train up "Home Guard" admirals who primarily defend my frontier (or would if I could get enemy ships to stop :P) and my combat admirals who primarily operate outside my space.

Aha! Well, I should have tested more.

Keep surprising me, guys!

Speaking of attacking and defending, is it possible to retreat? I thought I read that Hissho heroes will leave your empire if you retreat from battle, but I've never noticed a retreat or withdraw option.

Not that I've seen, but I'd like something like that as well. Even if it's an option that means I take a few hits running away it'd be nice rather than having all my scouts get slaughtered by pirates.

retreat is part of your strategy actions that need to be played in any phase of the combat

attack and defense values affect you weapon modules and defense modules. so it does not matter who attacks who. we don't have an attacker nor a defender in our combat.

hope this helps

cheers

Does that come from a tech or hero? Seems like something even a new admiral should be able to master. smiley: smile

Ohhhhhhhhhh. That makes a big difference. Admittedly that's probably covered in a Tutorial I skipped, but that's not very apparent in game for what it's worth. smiley: smile
