There are certain solar system upgrades that increase your approval rating. The stat is represented by a thumbs up icon.

I believe certain luxury and/or strategic resources will give a increase in morale for all systems connected in the network from the planet that contains the resource.

Through research, you can unlock the discovery and exploitation of more resources as well though I haven't had much time to fully investigate how many of those offer morale increasing properties and how many are more technology usage resources.

* Substitute the word 'morale' for 'approval' if you want. smiley: wink

Hmmm see my original systems which have all the upgrades i can put on them so far, are still very sad, despite the often-times presence of luxury items

and what seems a low tax rate, 35% ish

You can unlock additional upgrades (and I believe even planet utilisation options? But someone more familiar may be able to confirm.), through research.

Not everything is available from from the start, I have the same approval 'problem' starting out with approval hanging around 47-49% before researching more options. smiley: wink

Heroes are also a great way to gain approval. Just tick the "Propaganda" perk, I think thats what its called. It should give you a 20%+ approval in that system your hero is located. But go for the luxury resources whenever you can.

mine seems to not go over 30% approval in a system with most being around 15%

says that its got negatives from overpopulation, when like no planet is over 50% full

and from planet type?

The rougher a planet is, the higher a morale loss you get for settling on it.

Various anomalies can also lower or increase the morale for a planet.

Settle only the good ones (ones with morale perks or luxury/strategic resources) and research into the diplo tech tree to unlock things like infinite supermarkets, colonial rights, and information highways, or use governors with the propaganda perk. Boost your system's morale a bit then you can finish colonizing everything else within it

In my last game I settled mostly good planets, none less than -5% modifier, then set taxes way low to the point where all the systems register as at least content or preferably happy or even ecstatic...then watched the systems seem to bloom with growth. If you can avoid war and have time to build up lots of production points, then convert them to money and reduce your taxation rate that way.

Since my approval rating started to become tough to manage I ended up changing my tactic.

What I do now is colonize slowly, keep a good eye on approval and only colonize if the approval is atleast high 50% content if it is lower i lower taxes till light green happy, wait a few turns and raise taxes again as much as the approval will allow, and keep doing so till it's at my accepted level.

each turn at low taxes seems to have a good effect on approval so should not have to leave them to low for that long (depending on the state of the approval)

I don't colonize planets with negative effects unless I have the technology to cut down on said effects

that being said even with the technology availble I have not found a way to get approval up to an accepted level without playing with the tax system, but in all honesty it does not hurt that much and you start making it back in no time.

the best tip is from the start not trying to expand your empire to fast and to always check approval ratings before colonizing.

Some extra tips is, always settle the planets with most food first. Then go for the planets with vital resources. Then continue building stuff that adds up on your approval rating. That is what I did, and now I have a very very positive approval rating from my people.
