Happily pre-purchased and am noodling around with the alpha. I find I cannot derive my production values and I was hoping someone could explain how it works. Here's the data:

Started a "default" game. I start with one Terran planet, with 3/6 population. Anomaly on the planet is Mineral Poor.

On the System view, I mouse over the FIDS values to see where they come from.

Food: 5

+9 Planets (I can see that my planet is making 9 food)

+2 Improvement (Colonial Base improvement)

-6 Consumption (I guess each population eats 2 food)

Industry: 5

+3 Planets (I can see that my planet is making 3 industry)

+2 Improvement (Colonial Base Improvement)

Dust: 11.3 (shows as 11)

+9 Planets (I can see that my planet is making 9 dust)

+3.5 Faction Trait (+45% Dust for Businessman trait though I don't get what it's 45% of. Certainly not 9)

+3 Main system (Home system bonus I guess?)

-4.2 Tax Rate (No idea what this is. Something to do with the x0.7 from tax rate in the empire bonus list maybe)

And now the my home planet:

Under Terran it says +3 Food per pop, +2 Ind per pop, +4 Dust per pop, and +2 Sci per pop.

The Mineral Poor anomaly says -1 Ind per pop and -1 Dust per pop.

So with 3 population, I would expect the planet production to be 9 food, 3 Ind, 9 dust and 6 Sci. Which it is! So that makes sense. But the individual numbers that are displayed when you mouse over the FIDS don't make much sense outside of adding up to the correct value:

Food: 9

+6 from Population

+3 from Type

Industry: 3

+2 from Population

+2 from Type

-1 from Anomaly

Dust: 9

+6 from Population

+4 from Type

-1 from Anomaly

Science: 6

+4 from Population

+2 from Type

Hey there,

I'll show you how the calculations go - as far as I know. Your question actually helped me in getting some more insight into how this works.

Food (Planet)

Food: 9 (+6 from Population; +3 from Type)

The planetary food production is the only thing shown here, the first colonist produces the same as the planet has to offer as it's "per colonist"-rate, which is 3 food/colonist for Terran planets. This is the "+3 from Type", the "+6 from Population" originates from the additional two colonists that are on your homeworld - apparently the first colonist doesn't count towards the "Population" count here.

Food (System)

Food: 5 (+9 Planets; +2 Improvement; -6 Consumption)

Now the food production for the system as a whole is where the different bonuses and the consumption comes into play. As seen above, your planet produces 9 food in total and is inhabited by 3 colonists. These 3 colonists consume 2 food each, thus decreasing food production by 3 x 2 = 6 consumption. The improvement here concerns a System bonus, thus the 2 additional food is added here, making the total food produced by the system: 9 + 2 - 6 = 5.

Production (Planet)

Production: 3 (+2 from Population; +2 from Type; -1 from Anomaly)

Again, the planetary display shows just the raw data. What the different things here actually mean is that the additional 2 colonists are producing 2 production (1 production/colonist), while the planetary bonus should be +2 for this type of planets. The last term shows that an Anomaly is decreasing your production/colonist by 1. This actually makes the production per colonist on this planet 2 (Type) - 1 (Anomaly) = 1. Thus this planet produces 3 x (2 - 1) = 3 production.

Production (System)

Production: 5 (+3 Planets; +2 Improvement)

Here - as with Food - the planetary production (3) is combined with bonusses in this system (+2), thus making the system's production 3 + 2 = 5.

Dust (Planet)

Dust: 9 (+6 from Population; +4 from Type; -1 from Anomaly)

As with Production, this planet would normally produce 4 Dust/colonist, but this is reduced to 3 Dust/colonist by the Anomaly. Thus making one colonist produce 3 Dust, while the other two produce the +6 from Population shown.

Thus 3 x (4 - 1) = 9.

Dust (System)

Dust: 11 (+9 Planets; +3.5 Faction Trait; +3 Main system; -4.2 Tax Rate)

Now this is where the fun part starts. You have your base +9 Dust from your planetary production and +3 Dust from this being your Main System (I'm not completely sure about this bonus, I'm assuming it just indicates that this is your starting System). However - if I'm correct - the game takes a 50% tax rate as the normal tax rate, meaning that any tax rate above 50% will provide a "bonus" to your base Dust production and any tax rate below 50% will mean your missing out on potential income (-4.2). Finally, your faction trait is calculated at the very last moment, meaning it's 45% of the system production. This is ( 9 + 3 - 4.2 ) x 0.45 = 3.51.

This would make your System's Dust output: 9 + 3 + 3.51 - 4.2 = 11.31.

I hoped this helped you! If I wasn't clear enough please say so, since I have a tendency to explain things the way I understand them - not necessarily the way others do.
