This is an interesting way for me to find out that I can buy ships... I was getting irritated by the industry in a couple of my games. Was wondering why I even bothered worrying about money when I didn't seem to be spending it.

Edit: And on topic - I too have noticed that the AI seems to build a bunch of fleets and doesn't necessarily use them. It seems to be a last stand kind of thing, though, as I only encounter these buildups when attacking the last strongholds of an enemy.

Yeah, AI cheats. It's not too severe in general but it can be obscene in certain scenarios like the OP described.

That said, they also said that they did not want a AI that cheated and that the current AI was a sort of a "baby AI" so it is very possible that the current AI merely cheats because its a simple AI which purpose is to make the alpha playable.

Hope this is the case - don't want a cheating ai that pops out every turn with full stack fleets in the planet you're blockading.

medium terran w/ mineral poor and medium jungle w/ metallic water. maxed population they would have 36 base production + hero + exploitations. I have 2 200+ production systems that can't keep up. I've been trying to kill this last system for a like 30 turns now. Since they only ever had 2 systems, I know they don't have much tech either. It's odd, I was maybe 3 turns from having it invaded then they popped out with a bunch of fleets, I had assumed they just saved a bunch of ships up and launched them all at once. But now it seems like they're able to make dozens of ships every few turns.

Hope that this is not another game with cheater AI... I prefer less options but a clever AI then 150% production/research to compensate...

Heh I just tried attacking them again, now they have 12 fleets of 7 (ok one is at 5 of 7 but you get the idea) and at least some of them are updated ships designed to counter mine. I really am curious how they could build so many ships off of one 2 planet system, it's kind of ridiculous.

Buy. . pssh who buys. I had a system so invested into production I could pump out 5 medium size ships a turn, and the largest ships in 3.

So I'm on my second game, I have 10 systems and have beat the humans down to their home system (2 planets). Somehow they had 6-8 fleets of 7 ships. So I built a counter (laser/flak) and wiped out damn near all of them. Eventually they took my fleet out after 2 turns and 8 combats later, so I build a new fleet (maybe 10 turns) and go to send it in... they have 6-8 fleets of 7 ships again! Now I'm curious, how they hell are they doing this? If I put all my systems to industry focus and started pumping out ships constantly I could barely produce so many ships. Have they just been building ships since the beginning of the game? Do they get a bonus when defending the homeworld to make destroying an empire more difficult? Is the AI cheating?

Has anybody else experienced this?

Gathering intelligence is really important in the game, as you can easily counter the templates.

Yeah when the combat screen pops up you can mouse over the enemy ship and it will show you what they have, then you can design a counter. As I said in my op my one fleet of 7 ships wiped out about 7 enemy fleets. The eighth one got me. So my 7 ships took out 49+. Ship design is very important.

edit: but even then, for me to buy a ship outright costs 100+ dust, and it still takes one turn. (Unless you can stack purchases and they all finish in the same turn. I'm not sure) United Empire gets a 45% bonus to dust I think? There's no way they're making enough dust off of one 2 planet system to buy 50 ships in 10 turns.

I expect your enemy (being the United Empire) simply bought a bunch of ships instead of building them, UA is p much all about managing dust.

Actually pirates have weak ships. It's not great problem wipe it out using fleet of 6 cruisers with beam weapon.

That depend on what are the 13 ships and what are your ships. It's not the number but the quality of modules.
