Immediate question while still feeling out the game

Heroes...I have no idea how to get them. Is this research-related, or do they just appear or what? I've been playing the econ/diplo route and this may have something to do with this.

I don't recall what the tutorial page said on them (I've ready so many :/)

You should have access to 3 heroes when beginning a new game. If it's not the case, quit/restart the application. You can hire them if you have enough dust (in the Academy view).

A new hero appears at turn 50 or so. I've never made it far past that without restarting, so I don't know how often they appear after that.

You start with 3 heroes available for hire. There is a hero screen from the menu at the top left which lets you view them.

It starts with 50 turns elapsing before a new hero shows up - the tech tree on the left side has techs that reduce this delay

Now, if I can just figure out why everybody hates me because of my military weakness. I'd hoped I could take another route to victory and not have all this drama

If i cant just jump in here. Is there any way to increase the number of heroes you can have at one time? Is there an option in the tech tree?

Likely a technology to research. Just like increasing the size of your fleets etc.

yep there are academy size increase techs you can get, also in the left hand tech tree

Yea, the technology to increase the number of heroes you can have at a single time is INVALUABLE. very handy.

But still, so very far into the left side of the tech tree it hurts..

True. Although I did find that in my most recent game, by turn 125, I was well into every tech tree. Plus, playing as Horatio, i was able to clone the crap out of my best hero (level 13), and put them on my fleets for some massive AI destruction. hehe.
