I've always found that not many of these types of games have really advanced late-game technology. I mean if we think about Moore's law, technology should be incredibly advanced late in the game, so i'm wondering how big you're going to make the biggest ships, and how powerful the most powerful weapons?

Not very long to have the last ship (around 40 turns i think), and having best weapons takes a bit longer, you have to complete all the top part of the technologic tree.

I think some technology is better suited for being further down the tech tree. Dreadnoughts are surprisingly low on the tech tree, in my opinion. Additionally, they don't require special resources (unlike most cruisers). I might try playing on "slow" tech speed...I was a fan of "marathon" speed on Civ 5.

I know personally, from my current experience, I skip the Big double path on the military tree and instead advance up the middle while the AI take the sides. I'm kinda just tearing their fleets a new one with being able to mount 800+ MP for just my guns on a Destroyer alone.

I'm hoping you can get a good arms race with other players or the AI for a socking great leviathan of a ship
