This. Would. Be. So. Cool.

"I'm hit, Losing power." "Get to the life-po....". "Oho, Suck ma lazor, BUG". "Do you like rockets? I have one for you right here"

Would be fun if the chatter could also have a humorous tune to it also smiley: smile

I loved the chatter in Homeworld, really immersed the player and made you care about your ships more, would love to see battle chatter brought in. It would also help to let you know how the battle is going which can be tricky at the moment with the random camera movement.

yes, if they do implement this they better have an off button, lol

Yes! Another great example. Funny how a simple description of Kharak over the comm by Fleet Command after you arrive back from your training mission provides one of the most profound/impactful moments of any game I've ever played (although Adagio for Strings running in the background helped). Not some fancy cinematic, or heavily scripted ingame event, but just a simple voice conversation with background music. If voice comms are done right (ie not too campy or pompous), it can really hit home.

Not exactly true, its as simple as creating an audition thread on a place like Voice Acting Club or Voice Acting Alliance (at least for those that want english speaking voices). I know for a fact that many months ago the dev team for an MMORTS called Novus Aeterno posted audition threads on VAA and VAC with at least moderate success. A link to the facebook page for said game

http://www.facebook.com/novusaeterno

And mp3 files don't take up too much space depending on the compression, the alpha build download was like only around 2GB anyway that isn't too huge.

Now yeah it would require a small bit of implementation but for a game like this that doesn't have big cutscenes like in an RTS like Homeworld or Starcraft between missions there wouldn't be so much dialogue where they couldn't fit it in places where it could already be implemented and wouldn't require changing a bunch of code.

For example, empire events like colonizing your very first planet outside your homeworld or settling on a hostile world environment for the very first time, etc. could be voiced without much hassle.

As for the com chatter idea, I love it. It would add a very nice aesthetic feel to combat.

One thing that would be kinda cool, though probably not implementable, would be to have a voice over for the tutorial boxes/sections. I've always liked having some sort of fleet command voice or something that is like an overview of what I'm doing if its implemented correctly and has a cool sounding voice.

Which would be nice considering I haven't heard a single voice over or voice sound effect the entire game, most of the audio is background music or mouse clicks period.

Hell yeah, Homeworld had some of the best unit and random chatter I've ever experienced, along with Command & Conquer.

There would even be random chatter about things like running low on fuel, or things like "Uh, we have a situation here" if the fleet seemed outnumbered or outmatched. Random chatter not just when you were selecting or commanding units is the best kind of chatter because its immersive and you don't expect it.

Chatter would be great, especially if it were gameplay specific, ie related to played cards, weapon & defense effects.

Yes, I think it would be great to hear your heroes talk (I think only heroes could be allowed to speak), giving orders in every new battle phase, changing with the card you chose.

Sword of the Stars also has something like that, mainly when acknowledging commands, but not restricted to. I also agree it would add to immersion when battles resovle. Good idea smiley: smile

Has anyone played Freespace 1/2? One of the things I loved about them was the constant banter between pilots, capital ships, etc over the comm. It really made the battles feel "alive".

Here's a trailer of Freespace where they used ingame comm chatter for the voices:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhAR8rWPluQ&feature=related

"Allied force now jumping in. Listen up pilots, Beta wing take out that cruiser ahead, Alpha cover beta!"

It really adds immersion + it would give another cue on how battles are progressing.

I hated how sots did it, in that they only have x number of voice files. after a while my son (age 3 at the time) started making fun of the game. When I asked him to do something he would respond "Yes my queen, it shall be done my queen" Yes I loved the insect race with the instant travel lol.

i too had a soft spot for the hivers instant travel ability,

it was so nice to start a game and throw out like 10 gate ships to the far edges of the galaxy and then many many turns later creating new splinter areas when they finally reached their destinations

truly felt like casting your future to the interstellar wind smiley: smile

but i agree that their voice files became repetitive very quickly lol
