Weapon/Defence efficiency - What does it mean?

I totally stomped the AI, dealing 5000 damage to their 600. That's like 10:1 damage. Why does it say my "Beam efficiency" is only 31%? They have no beam defense. And almost all my weapons are beams.



My ships are on the left. The AI's ships are both identical, so I just put one card in the image.

Efficiency seems to mean how much actually hit without either a) missing or b) being deflected/absorbed/shot down.

The defense efficiency on the other hand seems to state, how much of the damage that could have been inflicted on your ships has been deflected/absorbed/shot down.

Ok, since they didn't have any shields, they didn't do option b) deflect/absorb/shot down.



So that means it must be option a). Missing a lot. Only 31% of my possible beam damage hit? Why, and what can I do about it?



Another possibility is wasted overkill. Maybe I just smacked a fly with a bazooka.

Beams have the highest accuracy during medium range battle phase and worse accuracy during the other phases. If you killed those little ships in long range phase, you're bound to miss a lot.

Also note that you did over 5k1 damage, and their ships had a grand total of 1k2 hit points.

As AngelWorm said, overkill might be counted as efficiency loss.

Efficiency is how much damage you've done divided by how much damage you should have done.

For instance you fired for 500 points of missile damage, and only 250 damage was taken by the enemy. So your missiles are 50% effective.

Ah, I see. Can we get a chart on what weapons are best at what ranges and what counters them including race specific techs? I would love to have a poster or sheet up by my monitor so I can refer to it with an after action report.

Missiles are best at long range, and are countered by Flak.

Beams are best at medium range, and are countered by Shields.

Kinetics are best at short range, and are countered by Deflectors.
