Some silly questions

I have a few silly questions from my first few days of play, as well as further suggestions:

1. Unfettered travel - is this working? I saw the AI do this during a game but since the event popped up I do not know how to make use of it.

2. How do I select an individual fleet in transit if there are two side by side or in close proximity? Going into the fleet window doesn't maintain the focus on the fleet.

3. Hero bonues - is the levelling of heroes dependant upon their initial characteristics? Anyone drawn out a hierarchy? smiley: wink

4. Is there a way of picking which fleets fight which enemy fleets when attacking with multiple fleets?

Suggestions:

I know lots of people have talked about keyboard shortcuts, but the simple addition of pressing up/down to go into planet/system mode would save me a bit of clicking and stop me clicking on my other monitor and minimising the game!

All going well so far, keep it coming

2. When you click on the fleet orbiting the system, all the fleets in that system will show up in the lower left corner, with their CMD(command points) points and fleet Name.

3. If the hero is a commander, he will have powers that enhance his/her fighting capability. If the hero is a administrator, the hero have enhanced dust/food production (Or something)

4. Yes, same way as #2. The fleet selected is the fleet which will fight.

I would love to answer nr 1 too, but I don't know what Unfettered travel is.. :P

Hope some of that helped you smiley: smile

Is the unfettered travel mentioned in #1 a reference to the hyperspace that lets you travel without space lanes?

I rmember seeing something about it in the tech tree but never tried it myself. All I've done is wornhole navigation

1. Unfettered travel - is this working? I saw the AI do this during a game but since the event popped up I do not know how to make use of it.

=> your ships only use this when they can't travel otherwise to the desitination (i.e. enemy territory). you cannot "drive" through enemy territory without open borders agreement (or war). Ships with Warp drive can.

2. How do I select an individual fleet in transit if there are two side by side or in close proximity? Going into the fleet window doesn't maintain the focus on the fleet.

=> thats a total pain, i usually zoom way in and try to hit them with a click.

3. Hero bonues - is the levelling of heroes dependant upon their initial characteristics? Anyone drawn out a hierarchy?

=> i think that mostly depends on their stats, but i'm not sure yet (so offense 10 unlocks trait X)

4. Is there a way of picking which fleets fight which enemy fleets when attacking with multiple fleets?

=> you can pick which fleets attack, but apparently not which fleet gets attacked.

Thanks for your swift reply.

2. I was asking about fleets in transit - is there a way of selecting (of finding) a fleet that is not in a system?

4. Can I select from the multiple enemy fleets? Seems unfair that my fleet of 12 fights the 2 patrollers then my procreators have to fight their main fleet! I realise that playing better will prevent this occuring, but if I had some specific missile/beam fleets to attack a specific weakness then I would like to exploit is as much as possible.

Unfettered travel is where you can travel between two star systems without wormholes or star lines. I can see the AI is able to do it and I had the game event.

1. travel outside warplanes, it comes after you have researched a certain technology. So yes, it is working.

2. you can scroll or simply clicking on the fleet icon, if 2 fleets at same spot, you have a mini fleet menu opening up in the lower left corner and you can select one of those fleets.

3. No, you can choose whatever you like. I tend to prefer having 2 strong admins and 1 admiral at the beginning afterwards, depends of how many wars I have to fight.

4. Only the first one. Select one fleet out of the many in the mini-fleet window (left click does the trick) and then engage combat.

@cocane - thanks!

So for unfettered travel to work do I need to have previously visited the system or should I be able to just do it? I presume it's automatic.

The AI appears to be able to send its scouts etc into my home hub whilst we are at cold war. Certainly last game a few dreads turned up in my main system via this method (but we were at war).

then maybe they cannot fly directly to your main system because

a) they havent scouted the jumplanes needed for it

b) are at peace with someone between you and their position

c) ... theres always a c i didnt think of smiley: biggrin

Thanks Sharidann

I need a tech as well as the game event?

The fleet window doesn't seem to appear if they are not in a system.

There are generally 3 to choose at the beginning and my preferred setup is the same as you describe above. My question was whether it is really that important what the starting characteristics (e.g. adventurer / corporate) are when the level abilities seem to mostly be universal. i.e. can I take someone with pilot and corporation and within 4/5 levels haev made them more like a industury/corporat without having nerfed a load of bonuses. Should I change a level 5 corp/pilot who is administrating a system to a level 1 corp/indy at level 1 once one becomes available (50 turns!)

So if the enemy has 5 fleets in a system I can't pick which one to take out first? Seems unfair when they can do it to me! :-P

Thanks for all the help and discussion!

You need to research the warp technologies. The first one, that opens a slow warp, is Atmospheric Filtration, a tier 4 exploration tech.

Not being able to select a fleet in transit when two are close by is a known bug.

I believe the levelling is based on a hidden (Show it to meeeeee!) talent tree. I have seen talents being made available after getting a talent, but not after a general stat increase.

snobskidoo wrote:

As others have said, choose the one you want to fight with. It seems you will always attack the weakest enemy fleet, though, which I sincerely hope is a bug. smiley: smile

And would fit very well with what is already in the game! When you are in system of planet view, arrow right/left shows next/last star/planet.

The starting 'class', if you will, is set and seems to decide to a certain extent what talents you can choose. Administrator, Corporate, Adventurer etc all have different abilities, and these cannot be changed.

Thank you Solitas, that pretty much covers all my questions for now!

I strongly suspect the higher hero abilities are based on starting attributes, in which case the decision to change from a high level to a new one is quite tricky! I've seen some interesting things appear with spies when I was expecting movement bonuses, etc.

I think I may start flying with some crap fleets to through at the feet of the smaller fleets before pounding with proper fleets to get round the problem of being unable to simply take down their biggest fleet!

Thank you all again

See you around

I have a feeling this may be fixed in next week's patch. smiley: wink

And you're welcome. smiley: smile
