Suggestion - combat cards

I'm seeing several people complaining they don't have enough time to choose what card to play in the Long Range phase. Thinking about it, I wonder if it would make sense to allow the *attacker* to pre-select the first card, since they know in advance what they are attacking and in reality would be prepared for the assault? Obviously the defender wouldn't really have as much warning and therefore it feels more natural for you to have to choose a tactic during "approach".

As a mechanic I really like the card system, though it took a little getting used to, although could I also suggest that somewhere there's a list of known enemy ship designs, accumulated during battles, which would allow you to estimate in advance what weapons/cards the enemy was likely to have?

Just my 2 cents.

I think the time it gives you is just fine. As long as you're familiar with what cards you have, you can guess which one will be more effective and go with it.

Seems like a good idea.

But, you do realise you can familiarise yourself with your cards by selecting your fleet on the star map and selecting 'Battle Actions'?

Yeah, I'm happy with the time it takes me to select a card. I found the battle actions section by accident, wondering what it did! Just thought it might satisfy some of those who are less happy with the time available. Personally I think it's a really cool mechanic, but I thought it would be an interesting (and a little realistic) way to increase the time if it was something the team wanted to do.

Thanks for the feedback!

I agree.Haven't faced such a problem, although this could change in multiplayer.

Time is plenty now (perhaps too much). I can see it as being quite short for beginners though.

Perhaps if the tutorial is turned on and it is a single player game, then for the first fight, freeze time and point out what you have to do and how much time you usually have.

I find the semi-realtime combat a bit of a jarring transition from the rest of the game, and sometimes I blank out and forget that I need to select cards. I'd love for there to be an option for combat that gives you as much time as you want to select each card, then you can press a button to autoresolve that stage of combat. Also, seeing the exact same fight play out visually for the umpteenth time gets old. I like to take things slow.

I like your suggestion for a database on known enemy ship types. It would not only let you prepare if you thought a battle was soon approaching, but it would also let you see global trends and set: research, ship design and production to combat specific civilizations in the very long term.

I agree that there should be the option to allow players to autopause before moving onto the next range of battle. I like the 'real-time' but there will be times when I just want to sit back and watch and not be too stressed, and having that option would be great.

I'm wondering if there are plans to make the card artwork a little more iconic for final release. While it won't take long to memorize many cards, the info on the card should still be a little easier to read on a quick scan. Especially when you have a whole stack to choose from and only a limited amount of time. I don't have the luxury of scanning words and letters then. Make icons for the different systems that get bonuses, and then add '+ 25%" and such.

Thanks!

I did not know this! +1 to you.

I wouldn't mine some sort of counter in the last, say 10 seconds of each phase to remember to play a card... I often do forget because I'm just watching the fight.

Nothing intrusive, just something to remind me of that lol

tactics, over, nano, and camouflage are all I ever use. think 15 seconds is enough to pick them. If your ship is damaged do nano first then one of the others. you can pick all three at the start
