So I am cruising along as the Sophons. My game is about turn 88 or so. I have cruisers. I am working both sides of the arms tree, Missiles and Lasers and respective defenses. My southern half of the Constellation is un-patrolled and I am waging war against the United Empire in next Constellation. I have a planet at one end of worm hole, and staging my fleets from there to attack.

Along comes a fleet of Pirates with advanced missiles that destroy my light destroyer fleet in south and they park on one of my resource planets. I ignore them for now since they are not moving.

About 10 turns later.....

OMG my beloved Ophir is now a Pirate haven and is now GREY and un-owned by me!!! What.>>??? DOH (hear the Homer simpson scream in Galaxy!!)

Needless to say I was surprised by the fact the Raiders came back with SUPERIOR firepower and invaded an established colony and took it!

Going to wait for new build to see what changes may come.

Thanks for a great game!

Yea, those pirates can be pesky. In my current game they're set up well in a largely uncolonized and unexplored constellation(I've taken up to calling it the Wild Expanse). They're providing no end of frustration to the nearby Hissho and Sophons, the pirates even grabbed a few colonies from them while they where warring with the Horatio.

Yep I've definitely seen pirates take other factions' colonies and I always get a tad annoyed when I share a common border because I know inevitably a 15 command point pirate fleet is only a turn away if I'm not paying attention. I find pirate builds to be interesting but not so hard to fight, they tend to neglect any kind of defenses and vary their weapon systems so as long as your defenses aren't totally specialized you can usually deliver heavy losses on them without too much damage to your side.

EDIT: Oh and when I first encountered crazy pirates in my first game I totally considered a thread with the same title. smiley: wink

+1. Apparently the difficulty of pirates can vary a lot between games. I have lost a few due to pirates, so now I switch them off. I feel a little guilty since it means I don't need defense fleets on interior systems. If there were a workable "low" setting I'd use it.
