Tips on making peace for a beginner

Hey Folks!,

This may be a silly question...

But I'm having trouble increasing relations and getting other races to agree to peace.

I'm playing as the Sophons in a default galaxy. There are 3 wormhole links. I KNOW the Cravers are past one, so I'm building up strength to tackle them, and I know the UE are past another, so I'm trying to make peace with the UE so I don't end up fighting a war on two fronts..

Anyway, the UE start at -2 relations from tense borders, I've tried trading Redsang, Technology, giving away Dust, but they're always -2 and +0 from current deals. The message comes up as insufficient attitude trend when I offer peace, has this anything to do with alignment.

If anyone can offer any tips? I've only over steam-rolled with the Cravers smiley: stickouttongue

At this point, it' hard to have friends, diplomacy isn't very balanced...

By making more deals such as the trading you've already done you should start to see an improvement to your relationship. I don;t think it is an instant bonus, but one that builds with time. Also you may find that one of your big negative modifiers is perhaps having a weak military force (happens to me all the time). If this is the case build some more ships, even if you don;t really want to use them and just stay peaceful with whichever neighbours you want to be friends with.

Following these methods your positive attitude with them will increase until either you are able to offer them peace and have them accept it or they will offer you peace.

It's not exactly subtle diplomacy, but the best way to stay on peaceful terms seems to be to 'walk softly, but carry a big gun', i.e. make sure you're not the weakest target militarily speaking!

Try blockading neutral systems between yourself and the AI you want peace with. Don't let your borders touch theirs. Keep them from colonizing neutral systems and don't colonize them yourself. Never, ever let yourself have a warp link attached to a potential trading partner. They'll go psychotic if you do.

Thanks for your advice guys! You're right though, it was pretty much impossible, a few turns after this post they jumped to -69 spontaneously and started sending scouts over to blockade my systems. Luckily they ONLY use kinetic weapons so far and I pretty much dominate them defensively.

do what i did give nothing but weapons tech to the "birds" hissho once they have contact with the cravers and try to get a diplomatic or dust win.

In my experience, the AI is so touchy, you literally can't do anything without it upsetting them. I'm constantly being told that the other factions are wary of may rate of expansion and the increasing size of my military. I play Sophon! Why do you feel threatened by my squid ships? smiley: stickouttongue

The messages don't always match the reason, it seems like. I've never seen a negative modifier for having a large army, when it's actually a negative for expansion that changed their attitude.

Right now I don't think I've ever seen the AI accept any of my diplomatic proposals for cease fires or making peace. If they offer, you better leap at it.

Make sure you have dust income, get a planet with totally spiked production, and have it pump out your best ships anytime its otherwise idle. Spare some research time for weapons and shields upgrades and use your dust to keep the fleet retrofitted. Try to stay at #1 for military power.

Leave some of the shitty planets with advanced anomalies and no resources for colonization after you can terraform them. Just having a mediocre sized empire but colonizing every single planet within their systems can draw expansion ire upon you.

Yeah I think the diplomacy is very rough at the moment, I'd guess that's something which will be fine tuned once all the major bugs are worked out and the core mechanics are stable.

I've actually seen some very confusing diplomacy messages. I've actually seen the system report 'Due to your efforts at securing a durable peace, the is now WARM to you (was FRIENDLY)'. What had actually happened there was that the faction expanded their military, and got ahead of me enough that they started to sneer at me, so I dropped from FRIENDLY to WARM.

Hahaa, sounds like a bit of multiple personality syndrome coming through!

Maybe it's a comment on how I was 'securing the peace' by not building military ships, and how my efforts to secure the peace had thus become detrimental to the relationship!
