That tech gives me what?

Someone explain to me why having cities that last forever grants me the ability to use EMP. I can understand barrier, but not EMP.

Explain why being able to mine suns allows me to amp up my shields.

Explain why being able to mine black holes allows me to build self-replicating cities.

There's some weird tech to results conversions. Is this just Alpha being alpha or am I just missing some key science here?

1. Solar energy can be converted to energy to power shields?

2. Penrose process? (I thought the mining black holes tech reduced production cost)

Actually though a lot of the techs themselves seem plausible- they could always add in a few more...star lifting/dyson sphere, white hole discovery/exploitation.

But I do agree that some of the outcomes seem a little weird.

You're mistaking cause & effect here.

#1 To get close enough to a sun to mine it you need great shields (I guess you've never seen / read that famous SF story where the good guys win by going close enough to the sun where they survive but the bad guy doesn't?) so you design those great shields so you can mine the sun.

#2 Mining black holes requires a constant replenishment of matter as whatever you're mining with adds it's own matter to the black hole via accretion constantly. So you need self-replicating nanobots to make your mining tools out of.

~ But really. "missing some key science".

Yeah.

About 10,000 years worth.

Hmm some of the names don't seem to make sense.

f.e. Magnetic field generators giving me +40 research in a system. The description doesnt help either:

Creats a magnetosphere in order to compensate for the lack of a liquid ferrous core. Provides stable environment for planets otherwise bombarded by radiation.

Uhhmm... nice... makes living better on planet that don't have iron cores but why does it help my research and what does it do on planet that have such a core?

Should be called something like "Automated Laboratory"... (because pops don't influence it)

I think you guys are missing the point here. Its a game. Although, it may just be me that doesn't care about such things as names of technologies.

@InFlamesWeTrust: (^^,) Well I do. I like it when the fluff makes sense.

f.e. I loved X-Com: Enemy Unknown (an ofc Terror from the deep) for all those research descriptions and autopsy reports. I think it helps to establish an atmosphere.

Btw if it wouldn't matter why give us a description at all?

IDK its never bothered me. I just want it to tell me what it improves :P

It's good feedback to point out text errors, or text which could be improved. It doesn't matter to gameplay and some players may not care.

@ MaterialDefender, if you can either (a) point out which specific tech items you don't "get", or preferably (b) write *better* tech descriptions, that would be great. There is a sticky thread for that here: /#/endless-space/forum/35-tech-support/thread/15379-text-errors

The more specific feedback can be given, the faster the game will improve.

This was more curiosity than anything. Trying to figure out how all these pieces fit together. But if I think what might be a better tech descriptions, I'll make sure to drop something in the suggestion box.

The text descriptions are impressive...fluff. It is a game and you are meant to have fun with it, not get your doctorate in physics! I think it is immersive if you allow it to be. Just don't take it seriously or as real science... ;D

@Jashbeast: I wouldn't call it realistic but it has to consistent and logical in its own parameters.

an example:

Core Mining:

Researchers developed super hard drill materials to dig up resources from the planets core to increase overall factory output.

+20% production

This is consistent in itself no matter the physics.

another example:

Magnetic Field Generator:

Creates a magnetosphere in order to compensate for the lack of a liquid ferrous core. Provides stable environment for planets otherwise bombarded by radiation.

+40 research per system

this isn't for several reasons:

First of all why is the bonus per system when its only influencing specific planets.

And second the description says it provides stable living condition on those planets so it should negate a negative effect. There is nothing in there that hints why it would buff my research only maybe that that kind of radiation would make my people dumb but then again it should give research per pop on those specific planets (and it should be a little better explanation as to why).

The sillier the tech stuff the better. Makes us pay attention to the description and not just the bonus. If we can research a tech that makes me giggle everytime, then that is a win.

I want a finger-longerer tech!
