Oh yeah... we need them....

Actually what I thought would be cool is mobile type bases. They would be slower and basically for repairs, construction of ships, and a few other cool things. I think this would give us a choice to greatly open up the field. I mean it is a galaxy it should take a while to cross between areas in my opinion.

No, they are stupid massive targets for any fleet that in the end could only be buit by somone who was already winning and thus would be pointless.

You clearly have no imagination or thought at all on this. They would have defenses all kinds. "Mobile planets", as I said. They would be just like any other ship. Customizable in many ways shapes and forms. Unless you have something to add try being a little less rude before speaking on in a public area.

Dreadnaughts are moving bases, And how in the hell do you move a planet?

And i was blunt not rude, but if i have caused offence take solace in the fact that i dont think your stupid, but that idea is.

Death stars are overkill. The array of ships already available should be fine, I like how combat works without trying to find a balance for a 'mobile planet'. Awesome as it might sound, it's too much. just being slow is not going to balance it.

Nothing I say is an attack on anyone. Just my opinion. So please don't fight. Discuss!

There is absolutely no need for end-all super-weapons, regardless of how you re-brand them.

I have to agree with the majority so far that super-weapon platforms are just unnecessary in this game. They present too large of a target, and would most likely take up too much time to make, let alone time to "customize" to keep it from being turned to Space Dust, which has no economic return at all.

Sigh... All you people see the word death star and immediately think that never mind then clearly nobody here is willing to brainstorm.

I don't want them. Cliche, boring, and stupid they are. Dreadnaughts are already huge.

Mobile bases don't make much sense either. Where would they get their production from?

There are already 4X games with enormous amounts of detail...ES is unique in its elegant simplicity. I hope they don't lose that as it evolves towards Gold. A bit more grain and texture is OK but too much is unnecessary friction.

i could only get behind a 'death star' if it was specific to ONE race. if one of the upcoming races had no cruisers/battleships? and had to rush for an uber dreadnought to compete with other races. or perhaps a race that focuses much bigger more expensive ships than any other race, favoring a few very powerful ships per fleet rather than many.

i am thinking Borg cube kind of ship. not indestructible, not one of a kind, just huge, expensive and tough as nails. i think it would add flavour. so far all races in the galaxy subscribe to the same military doctrine. Big fleets, of corvettes, destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and dreadnoughts. a race that heavily favours very few very big ships and a race that heavily favours dozens of small ships could be interesting thematicly and strategicly.

Why would we brainstorm a mechanic that we feel is entirely out of place and unneeded? And I certainly didn't jump on "death star." Bear in mine that "superweapon" is a catch-all term; they needn't house a giant laser to be labeled as such. Mobile planet? Superweapon. Allows you to build ships anywhere, and likely quickly. If it can build a dreadnought in 1 or 2 turns, it is emulating a heavily industrialized system.

To attack it from another direction, how do you decide that your "planet" has access to the various strategic resources if it is in a neutral or hostile system? At the tech level it would be available, you would be unable to use it outside of friendly space....So what is the point of having it to begin with? Not to mention the industrial power needed to construct this would easily produce all the ships you want.

To quote myself:

"There is absolutely no need for end-all super-weapons, regardless of how you re-brand them."

I think its a pretty good idea, not as an offensive ship but a defensive mobile safe zone, with defenses like a planet and not a ship.

It would have to be expensive both cost and command points vice, taking atleast 10+ cp (or what ever the fleet size mechanic was called),

but currently I don't think this will work... maybe when/if we have small fighter ship modules... since that's what ultimately protected the Death Star in the movies.

It's awkward as like somebody already said, it's more likely that the first faction able to build this will already be winning so it's just a game ender completely. Also, I don't understand how it will produce anything unless you're going to give it FIDS values. So then you'd have to figure out how big it's supposed to be and allocate points accordingly. And how would you destroy it? Would it take part in a battle, or just be in the background and be lost if the rest of your fleet is destroyed?
