If a fleet is fighting in a defended system, some of the planetary defense systems should help space combat above them. Would be cool to see some static defenses helping the ship to ship combat.

I remember how the Vaulters had all these special racial techs that added Science and System Defense, they could definitely use this trait. Folks like the Hissho (I know they're gonna be a minor faction in ES2) would probably disdain system defenses because Hissho are supposed to attack! Heh.
United Empire could get "Blockade Mines" which, you couldn't deploy many of them but they might show up in fleet combat firing a few missiles at an enemy fleet.
Let's see, we could have Cravers get a mid-tier tech to add Radiation Weapons to system defense as their race is resistant to radiation. It would be like launching planet-based nukes at an enemy fleet, or just irradiating your own worlds to cause negative hp per turn damage to invading fleets, meaning you NEED repairs, high hp ships, radiation-proof ships, or fast-invasion troop transports to assault Cravers worlds fast before you die from radiation.
Cravers could and should benefit from the "Irradiated" or "Em Radiation" or "Strong Magnetic Field" red-negative system anomalies, where other races suffer normally.
Sophons and Automatons could get Orbital Plasma Batteries that can fire energy weapons in fleet combat! I mean, the Auto matons don't live on their planets, they mostly garden their planets and live in huge floating Orbital Colonies. Those colonies need defenses right?
Systems with stellar phenomena like Endless Things, nebulas, and Asteroid Fields could reduce weapon damage 5% or reduce shield/defense module effectiveness 5% depending on the system. Kind of like Tie Fighters hunting the Millenium Falcon in Empire Strikes Back.
