Yes this has been suggested - No it has not been suggested that the devs use this opportunity to create a exclusively long range weapon, so this is a unique suggestion (think high accuracy, low tracking speed, (hits accuratly but not up close))
After a few solid playthroughs, i noticed one thing that irks me (in addition the whole fact that this battle system is just bad IMO, but something beyond that) there are no real weapons designed for optimal use in the long range phase, missles and gatling seem to be good for medium to melee, and the pulse beams seem to be good at about mid.
i highly suggest a sustained beam (as pietrack said: "Face it - the game needs beam weapons. Not the slow lasers we have now, but a beam weapon like the capital ship ones in Freespace 2. Just for eye candy and the flash.")
Eye candy, and more strategy options at long range.
My thought is to replace the current beams alltogether (OR ADD A FOURTH ARCHETYPE) and have heavier (more tonage), incredibly accurate, low dps beams.
