Digital distribution platforms: GOG?

Quick question: are there any plans to start working with the GOG team?

They are my digital distribution platform of choice and I would rather buy from them than from anybody else.

Apart from that I must say I am very excited about your project after the article I saw today at RockPaperShotgun.

Thanks in advance

The game uses steamworks. So even if you bought it on GoG (which is awesome !) you would still have to use steam to play the game.

I was very reluctant to do so. And finally I installed steam for ES. And I don't regret it at all.

Not to downplay people's decision to avoid Steam, but I find it's perhaps the most useful and well designed third party application I use. It's an impressive suite of content distribution and management, social connectivity, and in-game functionality.

I totally understand your desire to stick with one distributor (I hate it when things, like EA games, aren't on Steam!), however. Frustrating managing different accounts and stuff smiley: neutral

Yep, steam is goood. When it works.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with official Steam features (the beta version of Steam guard borked out on me to the point where I had to turn it off smiley: neutral)

What does yours do to mess up? I legitimately don't know anyone who has the client fail on them regularly :x

Not me, but people I know. Steam won't start, and when it starts they can't play their games.

Steam in my experience, although shakier in it's earlier days, is rock-solid. IMHO whenever problems are encountered in any aspect of life, rule number 1 is always check the operator/equipment of the operator first. No disrespect intended to anyone out there...

I realize this is stereotyping here but let me just say that based on my own personal experiences from both interacting with and reading posts on quite a number of different forums I find Europeans to be very anti-Steam in general. I will go so far as to say 9 times out of 10 when I see someone comment negatively about Steam on the net somewhere it is from a European (generally German or French but sometimes Scandinavian or Eastern European).

I'm really not certain why this is the case. Perhaps their internet infrastructure in some areas of Europe is not well established? If so, I can see Steam not being a good platform if you do not have good, constant internet access. I also think it's somewhat of a conceptual thing. I've seen quite a number of Europeans argue that you are "renting" the games and calling them "a digital nothing" and things like that. In the US I think we have adapted pretty quickly to the idea of purchasing digital content over the internet and services like Netflix and Kindle/Nook e-books are very popular. I'm not sure if this is the same overseas.

I always get really surprised to see that Europeans will complain less (again just based on personal observation on forum posts; no factual hard statistics here) over what I consider to be awful, draconian DRM like TAGES, Securom and StarForce than they do on Steam which seems (to me) to frequently generate many complaints from that side of the Atlantic. It's perplexing to me because I have had many problems with TAGES, Securom and StarForce over the years and they often come with a limited number of activations which is a problem for me since I upgrade my PC frequently. Steam on the other hand I have never had a problem with.

I was very (pleasantly) surprised that this French development team went with Steam for this game. I always get the impression from reading people's posts on the net that people in France do not like Steam and do not want it but it may simply be the case of the people who are disgruntled voicing themselves the loudest over others who have no problems.

Full disclosure that I am American and was at first a little wary of Steam way back, but now I love it and except for very rare cases I will not buy a game not on Steam. With the amount of games I have it is so much more convenient to have them all in one place, organized and updated. Many have cloud save too which is another great feature. Steam made gaming more convenient for me to the point where I now buy many more games. I can also say that I absolutely have never had any issues whatsoever launching or connecting to Steam, have always found it to be solid and can say the same for all the friends I know personally who use it.

I think in some cases people don't like the idea of Steam without having actually tried it, and believe me I was this way at very first too, but I gave it a chance and now I have been completely converted. I won't use any other platform for PC gaming.

I'm Swedish, overall I love steam. I just got my 302th game on steam.(Might not be huge, but big for me) I find it super practical to just download Steam, login, through it get all my games. No need for any huge storage of CDs (which I already have..) and if you lose your cd or key IRL your game is gone. But on steam you got both and can just easily access it at any computer with Internet. What I however don't like is how they price something equally in Euro and USD. That's one my main concerns, how some game for example in the US can be 45 USD (That's 306 SEK, Swedish currency) and I gotta pay in EU so that's 45 Euro (And that's 401 SEK.) So people in US get it cheaper and someone in the US can easily buy it and gift it to someone in EU, and they can play it without any issues. So why not put the USD currency for all? Would make it cheaper for me and many others.

Isn't GOG specifically for "Good old games"? In other words, games that have long since passed their prime?

Steam has some wonky issues, particularly where regions are concerned (I'm an American living in Korea and I can't access DLC for some of my games because of region restrictions) but overall it's a solid platform.

GOG recently rebranded themselves and now offer more recent games, such as Legend of Grimrock and Botanicula (as well as more oldish ones like Trine and Space Chem).

Personally, I'm hoping for a GOG release since I like having DRM-free games, not to mention I can pay the dollar price and not get ripped off.

I can understand that many people - especially for Singleplayer games - don't want to use any type of platform, just the plain and simple game.

But I can also understand the devs for just have at least some sort of DRM to protect the game ... and for this I'm very happy with Steam. Love their autoupdate, community features and Achievement system. The only main flaw is the not so good working offline mode ...
