ok so i picked this up today and im still a bit fuzzy on how the Territorial Sphere of influence works.

I have seen the AI have there Territorial Sphere get pretty large but i dont know how to make mine

do that and it seems to make a Rather larger difference.

Can someone clear this up for me ? or link a thread that has the info?

My full understanding of the territory (influence) boarder system:

Once you colonise a new system. you have to wait until your new system which starts as an outpost to become a full fledged colony (usually takes about 30 turns. You can check this on the top left when you click on the system). Once it becomes a colony it creates a circle of your territory which become your boarders. You can increase the size of your boarders through research (i believe they are on the left tech tree) to unlock new improvements to build for said effect.

Sometimes when your boarders grow they will cover parts of other systems that nobody controls. So when your territory touches an unclaimed system it essentially becomes "inside your boarders". An empire that wishes to travel to that system or even just through it would not be allowed to. Basically. nobody can travel through anybodies territory unless they are in a state of war, Or are at peace and have signed an "open boarders" treaty. It can be a great way to basically cut off entire areas to other empires if you plan it right.

Any system you have that isn't a colony yet and just an outpost is fair game while in a state of "cold war" and can be fought over without delcaring war. So be sure to guard any systems that don't have a territory circle around them.

Seems like some people are having a few issues with it though regarding their own territory sometimes.

The AI seems to travel throughout my space, checking out my planets, without any kind of permission or relationship to me.

Are they scouts? I'm starting to think scouts are the exception because i tend to find scouts in my territory all the time without permission as well. I remember also in my first game being able to send my own scout into a.i territory without permission (Although not tried it in a new game yet).

Another thing that I've noticed is that if a territory is unexplored then you can move into it regardless of whether or not somebody owns it until you see that they own it, and then you no longer can. This has led to some weird scenarios where I've managed to colonize a world inside of somebody else's sphere of influence, and since I couldn't send in ships any defending armies had to be built there while it was an outpost.

Outposts (as opposed to colonies) don't prevent travel. Most of your systems are outposts in the early game. Once you have the influence region on a colony (enhanced by Camouflage Projectors under particle scanning tech, 2nd tier on left) then ships cannot enter. If you sign open borders or declare war, then you can enter. Easiest way to see this is to move your ship near an enemy influence region, and then try to enter. Neither scouts nor other ships are allowed.

However, I have noticed that enemy AI influence regions are *way* larger than mine. The only tech I have found to influence this is Camouflage Projectors. Is there some other tech, or item to build, which increases it? Why are the AI's regions so much larger?

I notice that population also increase the radius, just for a hair.

I recall from memory that there is another one in the diplomacy tech tree (the west one)

Futuristic Game Theory tech, a ways into the diplomacy and trading tech tree will help. There is a building there called 'Entangled Sensor Array' which gives a +20% bonus on system borders. So far I haven't found any others...

**Edit**

So I looked again when I went back in game and found another, this time it is the last one. It is the next tech after Futuristic Game Theory in the diplo/trading branch called Neural Net Society, and the building it unlocks is the Signal Lenser Array. +10% sensors on system, +25% system borders.

Remember the ships aren't intercepted at the moment due to a bug.
