Almost all of my star systems are unhappy, mostly because of planets. How do I get rid of this "planet dissaproval"?

There are various ways. You might for example have negative traits built into your planets affecting the people's happiness and your FIDS ratings. To remove these you need the relevant techs which can be found in the bottom research tree on the right hand side, one of them is called Soil Revivification. Another option would be to just make your people happier with structures or heroes. Some heroes have the abilities that increase the happiness of a system and there are some buildings that do the same. One negative factor you likely have is due to overpopulation. The more people you get the less happy the system is unfortunately. To fix this you have the same option as above, you can build structures that reduce the overpopulation disapproval or some heroes have abilities that do the same. I think you;ll find the research for the structures are in the left hand research tree, near the middle or bottom of it.

Strangley, I don't have any anomolies on the planets. I get -45 for the planets and only -0.8 from overpopulation.

Ah, then that is another factor I forgot to mention. The planet's themselves often have a built in modifier. For example, people don't like living on Lava or Barren planets (-15), but they do like living on Terran and Ocean (no modifier). The way to solve this is either to add structures which increase happiness, as posted before or to change the planet type entirely. This can be done via terraforming technologies, which can be found in the bottom research tree, mostly under the rest of planet type colonization techs. These allow you to completely change a planet type, which will change the happiness modifier, but also change the FIDS output of the planet, so be careful what you change to! There may also be some techs which specifically reduce your population's unhappiness due to a specific planet type, but I'm not aware of it at this time.

Proper taxation is the answer! Around 30% should be fine plus things mentioned above.

True, but you can miss out if you focus on keeping people happy with low taxes, especially if you're playing as the United Empire!

The UE get a bonus to production if their tax rate is between 50-100% so if you're playing as them it can be a good idea to keep your population happy with other methods and then just increase taxes! smiley: smile

There is also a planetary improvement called 'Infinite Supermarkets'. It becomes available after researching 'Botannical Scanning' in the Diplomacy and Trading tree. It adds a +25 happiness bonus.

Cheers!

I see your Infinite Supermarkets and raise you a Colonial Rights(Optimized Logistics tech). +30 happiness and 10% FIDS when system is ecstatic

(Another is Unlimited Information Highways @ the Inter-Species HR tech.+30 happiness and -50% overpopulation disapproval on system)

(Corporeal Freedom, +40 system and +5 on assorted planet types. Permanent Vacation +50 system -50% overpop disapproval)

I've been finding and using planets that have bonuses to Approval.

I don't know if you have this problem but you don't need to colonize every planet, that one tiny barren planet with high gravity isn't really worth it imo.

It is deifnitely worth it with the soil revivification tech to remove the high gravity anomaly and endothermic structures to increase the population by two. Then it is a nice source for science points.
