Conquer 75 %, explore 50%?

Hi,

just a short question about the expansion victory (not about bugged victory conditions though).

To achieve expansion victory, you need to explore 50% of the galaxy

and conquer 75% of it.

How could you possibly conquer 75% of it when you've not even discovered all of it?

The explore-condition is either useless, or I don't understand it properly.

Probably the last- so could someone please explain? smiley: confused

Presumably (I am not sure) this means you must own 75% of the inhabited planets. So if there are 100 planets of which 40 are colonized, then you have to explore 50 and own 30.

I don't think that is the reasoning behind that. If it were the case Tiny games would be over a lot quicker than intended with a combination of scout and colonizer rushing if you knew what you were doing.

I don't however know what the answer might be. I found it odd that such a condition existed when I first saw it.

That does makes sense. Might be helpfull to clarify in gamesettings smiley: smile

By the time I won this victory, all the planets in the small galaxy were inhabited. Maybe time to start playing on larger maps...

By the time you've conquered 75% you can be pretty sure you will eventually win the game so it saves you from a tedious endgame?

It is worth trying, but it may not be that easy. Even in a small map you have to explore 50%, which gives the other players a good chance to expand. I know in Civ IV, there is also another "term" in the victory condition which says you must have at least N number of systems in absolute numbers, to prevent this.

Still, we are speculating. If anybody knows the actual answer, that would be great.

Update: I just accidentally won an expansion victory. The victory screen clearly says that you must achieve 50% explored and own 75% of the colonized planets. It would be fun to try spamming scouts/colonies to try to win this early. But I bet that extra term exists.

Thanks for clearing that up, it'll be interesting to see if any strategies spring up from this!

Like maybe an armed colony ship based on a Battleship hull, to fight of the random pair of small pirates.

I think the strategy he was thinking about is an early game strategy to rush colony ships and scouts, before the enemy can expand. I am not sure if this would work, except maybe in a two player game. In a four player game, to own 75% of the systems early, you would have to make colonies 9x faster than the other players if my math is right.

I suppose either strategy is viable, though I was thinking more along the lines of davea's suggestion. This would be something that I could see the Cravers trying to do with their early game bonuses. Also you wouldn't simple have to colonize, if you sent out a few small attack fleets to pester enemy outposts you would likely make those players switch from focusing on expansion to focusing on warfare, so you could almost sneak an expansion victory in while the enemy is trying to murder you smiley: smile

Hm. Craver cheap rush: put one or two weapons plus movement mods onto colony ships, then spam them. Might work. Might need wormhole tech for many maps. Fun to try!

Counter-intuitive attacks can be quite effective. but becareful that you don't over do it. You have bonuses for a reason.

That's interesting to know. I wonder if that means the Expansion victory will need to be scaled based on map size, so it's not too easy to get these Rush victories?
