[Answered] Border expansion?

I've been trying to figure out what affects the growth of the borders surrounding a system. I get a rough idea that it has to do with the size of a population, and I've been trying to find something in the documentation that tells me, but I'm completely lost in this aspect.

I haven't found anything by searching the tech tree, I haven't seen anything in the interface that informs the number of turns to expansion (as in the Culture mechanic from the Civ series), and I'm continually frustrated at how even the easy AI players seem to get their borders to double or triple the size of my own.

Perhaps I'm trying to expand to new colonies too quickly?

I know that the camouflage radiator, found under particle scanning in the civil tree (the one to the left) increases your borders if you have a legitimate colony. It says that increases your Star System's influence by three.

Population likely matter, and I think there's more than one tech for. There is definitely a negative random event associated that seems to hit the whole damn galaxy going by text.

The influence radius is affected by population and system improvements. (And also apparently a random event I haven't encountered yet). Hopefully the devs will add some influence indicator on the system screen. Also, the benefits of having a lot of influence is lost on me. What does it do, exactly?

Your little circle around your planets is your 'influence', or how far the system can see. This can be improved by expanding the population and with the camouflage radiator. While these mechanics may not make a whole lot of sense now, I'm sure it will be improved. Besides these things every fully developed planet seems to have the same large circle of influence, and cannot be expanded further.

I had the same experience as the OP at first, enemy AI's had much larger regions of influence. This is strongly affected by population, and what I learned is that the AI players had 2-3x the population that I did. This is because I was concentrating too much on industry at first, and not enough on food and happiness. I highly recommend to look at the 30-turn challenge results, and play it yourself to compare:

More challenges are collected in this group, which you can join:

I think that's the best answer in this thread so far. Moved to FAQ, answered and closed.
