Was this normal difficulty level or one of the easier ones? I have definitely not found normal to be a cakewalk. Usually I am last in points by turn 100.

Heavy Isotope Refineries are a must (UE gets the tech req. for free). Follow those with a little improved food production for a strong start.

Build just enough ships to defend from pirates, grab a couple quick colonies, rinse and repeat.

Keep your military techs competitive, get the appropriate colonizations techs for your planets, and push into the Applied Tech tree for better eco improvements and resource unlocks. The diplo tree is weak imo. Military and Applied give the strongest early bonuses imo.

I'm fond of Sophon since they can cruise through the tech tree.

I found the default start game to be a cakewalk : pirates didn't cause more damage than killing some scouts, I defeated the AI on my side of the galaxy with the first real fleet I sent (it didn't expand on another system), and after that I soon had 1.5x the score of the 3 other players combined so I considered the game won.

Though maybe that's because I had a no too bad starting system, and another very good system nearby?

I wonder why the default race is the Empire, while it seems to be the most complex one to play... (to use that industry bonus from taxation correctly)

What size map do you play? I play on the default small map, and there isn't enough territory to expand for 75 turns. My empires are usually around 7-8 systems before I encounter enemies on the borders.

Don't you find that pirates blockade all your systems? I have had trouble maintaining a balance between colony ships and protection ships. It is a known issue that the pirate difficulty varies *dramatically* from one game to another, so I suppose in "low pirate" games this might be fine.

Like in any other 4X game early expansion is incredibly important. By Turn 75 you should own the entire spiral-arm you started in. I generally go with building Heavy Isotop refineries and if necessary Sustainable Farms on my starting planet and afterwards just crank out as many colony-ships as possible while simultaneously researching the techs required to colonize the different planet-types. Of course while doing this, you still need to build up a decent military, because alien races will have a lower opinion of you if you're weak, which will incur a relationship malus, which in turn will make them much more likely to attack you.

Is it possible for the UE to get the economy running fast? I have tried a couple of games as Ythri (sorry, I mean mean Hissto :-)) and it seems better because of the +40 weapon damage. Still haven't won yet. If UE is weak, is it because the starting anamoly is too big? Or just the other races are stronger in general? If there is a tip for avoiding losing with the default race, that will make all beginners' initial experience better.

The start is really important. You need to get an economy running fast.

Try another race (the cravers for instance)
